And I "assume" you're talking loud daily, not SPL comps. Off a single 2200D I'd get 2 18" Q's as it'll sound good, get low, and be loud... That's exactly how the 15" Q in my GF's car sounds off 1k, so you'd just have a LOT more of that

One more fuzzy pic:

Is that 1 2200D for 2 subs? If so I'd look into lesser subs as the HDC will take a 2200D per sub. Or 2 FI Q's off that power. If you plan on another amp, then the HDC's with copper or aluminum coil would be fine. Haven't heard a BL, only Q's and BTL's. I did an enclosure a while back for 2 18" HDC's off a 4k amp. Metered around 149 I think and SQ was very solid for daily. Crappy camera phone pic:

I've built several for HT applications. One "warning" is that the tubes aren't that strong compared to MDF, so you'd need to be a little more careful in a car environment. Something smashing into it could easily dent/flatten it. Other then that they're pretty easy to build. You could also do square outer endcaps to keep it from rolling around.

What you're referring to is called kerfing. I've done a fewports like that and did the cuts 1/2" apart and 5/8" deep, so leaving about 1/8" of wood. And MDF is the worst stuff to bend, so go easy and practice on some scrap first to get the hang of it and see how tightly you can bend it...

Enclosure seems on the small side for HT. Recently did an 18" RL-P in 18+ cubes at 16.5Hz. My 15" RL-P's are in 10cubes each @ 19Hz and sound very good for music and AWESOME for HT. Might be "peaky" due to enclosure size. How did you decide on that enclosure size/tune?

Congrats Mark, looks like a very formidable sub for comp or loud daily. How is the SQ for a daily driver? I've heard AQ's, DD's, and MT's in lower tuned boxes and they all sounded fine for daily, so I'm assuming the SPL would do the same. Price is also very competitive. Another solid offering from MACH5. Now I just need to come up with a project so I can buy something from them.

Fleckstone paint can also look very nice and is pretty forgiving on surface prep, plus a decent variety of colors. I've done a few and they came out VERY nice...

Or call REMY battery in south Milwaukee if they'll give you a discount on buying multiple batteries. Prices are good to begin with and not that far from you...

37Hz tune........YUCK for an RL-P. It's not an SPL sub, so tune it lower....

NO 8" sub is going to be "that" impressive in a HT, unless it's in a closet. It takes a lot of air to pressurize a big room. I'm up near Six Flags if you want to hear what "damn" sounds like in a HT. I also build HT/car subs, so if you give me a budget I can give you some ideas. Silver port in a black box is not a problem...

sounds like a man crush.. nah im playing.... epik looks like some clean subs, any one have any experance with them? I stopped by AA about 15 months ago and heard a prototype Conquest. Was VERY impressive. Chad is a cool guy for sure and I need to get out there and check out the shop, etc...

Do you have room for a ported box?

need opinion on some batteries

I've been running 2 Deka's for about a year now. Really happy with them and price is right as I'm local to REMY. -
Top 3 choices are all solid. I've heard 2 12" Q's sealed off a 1500D and it was pretty impressive, hit low and had solid output. I ran 2 15" RL-P's in small ported boxes and they sounded great. No experience with the SSD's.

Search the AA forum on here. I ran 2 of the old style 8's in an AA ported "spec" box and was very happy with them off 800watts. Quite amazing little subs, especially for $50each back then.

looking for 1200-1500w@1ohm

Used SAZ-1500D's also show up on ca.com now and then for that price range. I got my last one off here for $200 and one off ca for $325 -
Low budget - MJ18 and BASH amp. Will also work in a relatively small box, like 4.5^3. Bigger budget - RL-P18 and pro audio amp. Wants a VERY large box, but will have tremendous output. I'm building a sono for a friend that will have an RL-P18 in around 16^3 @ 15.5Hz powered by an EP2500. Starting on it tonight and looking forward to hearing it when completed.

I had 4 Tempests in an IB set up and the sound was simply amazing, especially for music. Just blended so well with my mains. For HT it lacked some punch, and also the location I had to put them in was -6dB down compared to the old spot for the 2 ported Tempests. If you do decide on IB, get at least 2 subs and 4 would be better as you don't get the normal dB gain of a ported box, but if placed properly in the room, not in a null spot like mine, then you'll be quite happy I'm sure. Otherwise I'd just do a small sealed sub...

The human ear doesn't hear freq's that low. I personally don't care for super low freq's that beat my house to death, but add NO impact and can't be heard. Just not my thing...

Haven't built anything in a few months, so I've got the itch. Decided I want to do an MJ18 to add to my set up in the gym. Simple 2 channel set up with some Klipsch Legends and a Denon receiver that mostly plays 80's metal or 80's old school/dance stuff to get me fired up. Looks like 4.5^3 @ 30Hz is pretty popular for music, so that's what I plan on doing. Don't need any low freq stuff, just some nice punch for kick drums, etc... Box will be slot ported and downfiring and will also have a TV stand built on top of it, so it's functional. I'm used to building car boxes and normally do 12" of port area per cube of box. How much port area do I need for the MJ in a 4.5^3 box, 54^2 like a car set up? Have searched and searched but couldn't find anything. Much appreciated...
-
I worked up plans for a 4.5^3 @ 30Hz box. Slot ported and down firing. I have it saved on the PC at home if you want a link let me know...
-
How would the MJ18 do off a 300w BASH plate amp? Is that enough power to get it moving decently in a ported enclosure?
-
Plan on ordering later this week and also getting an EP2500 to power the RL-P's in the HT and moving the Hypex downstairs for the MJ18. Either going to do Baltic Birch and stain it or Trupan with paint, not decided yet, but I want it lighter than MDF. I'll post some pics of the build when it happens.

Thanks for the replies. Just worked up another box with 61.5^2 of port area for 4.5cubes. Still considering sealed as I don't need killer bass since this is just a gym stereo in a 24x20 room with cement walls and floor, so ultimate SQ isn't the goal.
