PM responded to and thanks for the link.. I've never done a xover before, but it doesn't seem that hard and I like building things, so I'm going to do the CC and use it as a rear center. One question though: since I'm running 2 mids do I parallel them for 2ohm final or series for 8ohm final? Not sure what the xover requires me to do.... NVM.....just looked at the xover on the AA page and it shows them wired in series.

Can you post up the enclosure specs/dimensions? Do they have a separate enclosure for a center channel as that's what I'd like to build with the spare mids/xt25 I have? I used to have an old AA archive link with all the specs, but can't find it anymore...

Might as well throw the AQ HDC into the mix, although I'd tune around 38Hz for that sub. Few guys on my team run them and they get quite loud, but also sound good on music...
-
Curious as to the installs you've done with the HDC's. A few years ago before ever hearing a DD or AQ sub I was of the same opinion, but after buying a few for myself and playing around with a few diff boxes/tuning I've been quite happy with the SQ for daily music listening.
-
Hopefully I can hear your DC sub at one of the Chicago CA meets this year. Or you can swing up by Gurnee when we have another Team DOA meet at my place...
-
HDC is NOT an SPL sub. It's a good sounding sub built to take a lot of abuse, that also happens to get very loud...
-
I already suggested you meet up with one of the DOA guys in Chicago and listen to the HDC's for yourself. Both are good subs and can get loud in the right set up. I've built enclosures for both, but many more for HDC/DD's as that's what most of the DOA team uses. Proper enclosure and solid electrical can make or break either sub. HDC's tuned to 38Hz will hit the lows in rap music with no problem as that's all the guys on my team listen to. I'm the only sensible one apparently

To the OP: I'd consider a single 12" SPL type sub: AQ, DD, Mach5, etc... and throw a ton of power at it if TL numbers are a concern. Dialing back the gain on the sub amp and having a solid front stage can give you plenty of SQ for daily...
-
The whole "accurate" thing  How would you compare the accuracy of an AQ or DD to the ICON? All in ported enclosures?
-
I'd do a ported wall tuned around 30-32Hz and be prepared to smile a lot and go deaf...
-
also look into the AQ HDC as it can get very loud off 2k of power and SQ will be more then enough for your front stage...
-
who really makes these amps?

I run Sundowns in my set up, but have installed AQ's in several others. I like both companies, so IMO it's more about the person's budget at the time of purchase. Either brand can make solid power with the proper electrical to back it up. I've seen a few issues with both brands, but those things will happen. Jake and DJ both offer EXCELLENT customer service... -
what type of music do you mostly listen to? I did a temp wall in my car a few months ago. 4 15's in 12cubes @ 40Hz (AQ subs) and it did pretty well. Box was too small, so it peaked rather high on the TL, upper 40's, but sounded solid on music and was insanely loud. Kick drums would BEAT you in the chest. I've read numerous times that the mids should handle kick drums, but most of the rock I listen to it's coming from the subs. I HP my mids @ 63Hz and LP the subs the same. 4 15's walled off with enough power will have a TON of impact. I would assume SQ isn't a major concern, but you should be able to make it sound pretty decent if the box size/tuning is correct and then some EQ'ing after the fact.

VERY impressive!!! What freq do you peak at?

I've heard SO many store bought junk set ups it isn't funny. I end up telling them to turn it up all the way, then I get "the look" as it's already all the way up. But they have like 10million watts peaks and I only have 6k RMS, wonder why I'm so much louder. Curious to know about these LOUD 200watt set ups being talked about

excessive amperage

been running an EA on my car for 2+ years with no issues. Nate was great to deal with. -
apparently hoffman doesn't show up at SPL comps a smaller enclosure will increase power handling which can increase SPL, especially when burping with a ton of power. A bigger enclosure will be more efficient, can't argue that, but at some point it will become a hindrance as too much power will cause the sub to bottom out. a smaller enclosure is the reason meade can push 5k to each of his subs as the box helps to control cone movement. Either box is WAY on the small side for the MT's. I've done a single 18 in 8.5cubes and it slammed off 2k of power. I recently did 2 15" MT's in 9cubes and it hits very hard also. These are daily boxes that get loud and hit low. I'm currently running 4 15" HDC's in 12cubes (threw in a wall in 4 nights for a show), so way on the small side also. It doesn't hit the lows very well, but does move a ton of air. I only have 1.5k of power per sub and they'd easily take 3k+ in this size enclosure. Smallest I've done 2 18's in is 10.25cubes and it does very well with 2k per sub. All boxes mentioned are 16^2 of port area per cube. You could always try it and see, but I think you're going to choke those subs to death and be disappointed.

3.5 - 4.5 will work with the HDC. 35-40hz tuning for daily. It'll take the 1200D like it's nothing, so you might consider a 2200D especially in a box that small. I've built several HDC enlosures this Summer, ranging from 2 18's to 2 12's. Very impressive subs for the $$$. Can also sound very good in the right enclosure. I had a chance to hear a pair of 12" Icons the other week and my 2 15" HDC's sounded better and got MUCH louder....
-
I like Trupan over MDF, but by me it's over double the price for a sheet. How much weight can you save with a box that small? A sheet of MDF is around 100#'s and the BB probably around 70#'s, but you probably won't even use 1/2 a sheet...
-
Haven't heard the DC's, but have done plenty of HDC installs and they'll take 2k each for daily and should get quite loud. I'm running 3k to each of my 15's with no issues and copper coils.

BOX FOR 15" AQHDC315 AND FOR 2 12" AQHDC312 OR DCSL LVL4
mlstrass replied to brendyn74's topic in Build Logs
Box is on the big side for HDC's. 4 -4 1/2cubes net is what they need. Just installed one today 4 cubes @ 38Hz, sounds very nice and should be loud once they're broken in. -
You can use a phone cord splitter so your remote knob will control BOTH master amps. No need to gain match that way if you trust yourself setting it by ear. That's how I run mine...
-
I've built a few boxes with Trupan and I prefer it. MUCH lighter, but also easier to cut, less dust, etc... Only issue is it's about 3x the cost of MDF where I buy from.
-
Max SPL would be more box/install dependant as both are VERY capable subs...
-
With that space and power 2 15" AQ HDC's would POUND and can sound very good for daily if tuned right...
