Post Your Home Audio Setups Here!

Hidden subs. Was an IB set up but lacked impact for movies. Was amazing for music, but this is primarily a HT set up, so I put them in low tuned ported boxes. Didn't build them pretty as the cover is always on.

  3. I'd suggest doing a ported box first and if you don't like the sound build a sealed one. That way you won't worry about what you "might" be missing

    Sub for Rock.Metal

Why do you assume it would sound better on a 12"? My old 15" Tempest in a ported box sounded very good playing anything, just wasn't loud enough. The RL-P's are plenty loud and very musical for lack of a better term. I've yet to hear a system even close to being as accurate as mine is, not saying there isn't better, just that everyone else around me is running junk. LOL "Didn't sound that bad" isn't a very glowing review, got me a little worried now as the GF has BIG expectations for this sub.

What do you guys use for boxes?

I did my first sub cut outs using a spiral up cut bit last week. AMAZING Had never heard of them until last week, best $20 I've spent lately.

    15" Q Build Log

3/4" masking tape is perfect for taping off the parts I don't want painted. I also scuff up all surfaces that will be glued together just to be sure I get a good bond. I was going to use a brad nailer, but think I'll glue & screw this one together as I like the countersunk screw heads showing on a stained box. Personal preference.... That's all I got done in an hour today as I had a bunch of places to go. Tomorrow I'll do the assembly and post up more pics. Looking forward to the flush mount look as I've never done a box like that before. I'll probably use a 1 1/2" hardwood dowel rod for bracing as I "believe" it offers less restriction to the airflow inside the box. Or because I happen to have a 4' hunk in the garage somewhere

    15" Q Build Log

I use the free version of Cut List Plus which only allows you to enter 5 pieces. I get around this problem by doing doubles of pieces that are close to the same size. Right wall is 19 3/4" x 14 1/4" and left wall is 19" x 14 1/4", so I just do 2 of them at 19 3/4" long. I combine the front/back panels also, and the port pieces. I cut everything to length first, and then set the saw for 14 1/4" and did ALL the pieces to width, so the height will be PERFECT when I assemble it.

    15" Q Build Log

I always have HD cut down the 4x8 sheet into roughly 3rds, so it'll fit in the back seat of my car. I know their cuts suck, but I have plenty of room to square them up. BB is much nicer to work with compared to MDF. A LOT less dust and it doesn't dent easily if dropped. Only thing to watch out for is splinters, so I keep some 100 grit on hand to clean up the edges right away.

Heading out to the garage to start cutting. NOT liking the 35 degree temp outside though...

    15" Q Box

Looks like 31-32Hz it is then. I'll be starting a build log probably over the weekend as I'm receiving the sub sometime next week. I'll be sure to do solid review, so we can get some info back up on the board.

    15" Q Box

Since the board was wiped out not many old posts to search through. Joining the FI ranks and picking up a 15" Q for the GF's car. Trunk space is important to her so I'm looking at doing: 2.8 -3.0^3 @ 31Hz. Sub will be getting around 1000rms off a PG amp. She listens to most anything but country, so I'm looking for an all around good sounding/respectably loud set up. The few posts I've found most guys are using around 3.5^3, so anyone have experience with this sub in the smallest recommended size of 2.8^3? TIA...Mike

    Just purchased a 12" BL

Little trick I learned when building 1/2 pipes for my kids to skateboard on. Use 1/4" or even 1/8" wood and do several layers. MUCH easier to bend and you get the same strength. Good luck as it looks like a VERY cool idea. Can't wait to see the finished product.

    Build Log

VERY nice equipment and install. Only thing I'd suggest is using some sheetmetal and filling in the big hole in each door and deadening that also.

    15" Q Box

Should I tune even lower then? Not building the box until Saturday, so I'm open to suggestions for tuning...

    Making another Fi purchase

Couple of ideas: Port the 12's, you know who will build the box for ya 2 BL's and another Sundown strapped. Pretty sure that's enough power for them. Not much feedback on the SQ of the BL's though. How big is the actual trunk opening on that car as that determines what size box(s) you can actually fit? Might have to do 2 boxes like I did. You sticking with 12's or thinking 15's? Good luck on your decision and holler at me when you're ready....

    Just received my 12" Q

Can you build a "temp" ported box out of MDF to see if you like the sound/output? If it's not what you like then glass up a sealed box....

    Sub for Rock.Metal

I'm running 2 15" RL-P's ported 2.8^3 @32Hz each. I listen to a LOT of 80's metal, Tool, Pantera, etc... and it sounds amazing. Kick drums have MAJOR impact, but not overpowering. Never tried them sealed, but I have no regrets going ported. I'll be doing a single 15" FI Q 2.8^3 @ 31Hz for the GF's car. Should have it installed next weekend, so if you haven't purchased by then I'll let you know how it sounds as she also listens to a lot of metal. I also agree that your midbass has to be up to par to complement your sub.
  18. And you can get that amp for around $230 from several other places...

    15" RL-P Box Sizes/Tuning

First time using BB and I love it. Much less dust than MDF and boxes are at least 15 pounds lighter per box, so a lot easier to get in/out. Just slapped on some stain I had in the house and a few coats of poly.

    15" RL-P Box Sizes/Tuning

I started out with 5^3 @30Hz for 2 15's per Mike from SS. SQ was excellent and lows were amazing. I consider this my reference box. Then I went to 5.8^3 @35Hz. Was shooting for 6^3 @ 34Hz, but did some goofy math at 2am. Subs had more punch in the mid/upper bass, but lacked low end compared to the "ref" box. It was definitely louder, but lacked impact. I tried it for 2 days and didn't care for it. I extended the ports and ended up with 5.4^3 @ 32Hz. I consider this the ultimate tune for LSQ. Plenty of deep lows, loud as he!!, and still very articulate and musical. Kick drums literally beat the car to death. Thank god for the 150#'s of sound deadener I have in there, but I'll need to do more to the rear package shelf as it's vibrating again. Few days worth of playing around and now I'm loving my RL-P's even more!!!!

    SS in the early days....?

Did you even discuss the 2nd sub with Mike before coming on here and ranting? Seems like that would be your best bet for getting things resolved.

    15" RL-P Box Sizes/Tuning

RL-P's are VERY impressive LSQ subs. Very articulate and musical, but will pound when you want them to. They're a perfect match for my front/rear stage. Yes I run a rear stage, Pioneer REV's off a Profile amp with the trigger wired to a toggle. When in the mood I flip the switch, turn up the sub amp and let her rip VERY loud and very pleasing to my ears. I always here the same thing when I demo my set up for someone: man those subs play low and d@mn is your system clean sounding, and that's at stupid loud volumes.
