It's WAY better to work with compared to MDF. Only "issue" is the boxes end up so light it's hard to hold them still when routing out the sub opening...
-
More like this? I didn't want her box to be the same color as mine...

First coat of "Puritan Pine" stain is on. Will add one more coat to darken it up a fuzz. Poly will have to wait until tomorrow. Actually the GF has the day off, so I'm betting she'll be slapping it on as she's DYING to hear her new baby!!! She's really into antique furniture, so the wood look is just what she wanted. And I HATE gray carpet....

I decided to make the flushmount part bigger than required, so I'd get the open spots on top/bottom. Just wanted a "different" look. Also added a cove to the lip of the sub cutout. Looks pretty nice in person. Inside is caulked up tight, not that it really needed it and I threw in a "T" brace since the baffle didn't need any.

Guess who showed up today, 2 days early. DHL friggin' rocks!!!! Now I gotta get my butt going, but you can't really speed up the polyurethane process as it HAS to dry...
-
More progress tonight. Box glued/screwed and sanded. Port and all edges rounded. Pic was right before I took it out to the garage to router/sand it.

Might I suggest a few drinks to "get her in the mood"......for loud music. LOL That's what I did the first time I wanted her to hear my HT set up. Was playing some 7 channel music and every glass of wine she had I'd turn it up a little louder. After 3-4 glasses I showed her what it could do. She about $hit herself, but now she's hooked....

I hear you on the ex thing, that's why I made sure it was an UPGRADE when I traded her in for a new model. Most women will listen to loud music "if" it's something they like and it's a good sounding system. I couldn't drive around listening to most current rap stuff as the monotonous bass lines drive me f'ing crazy, especially played on some "fart box" subs!!! Just waiting for lunch time, so I can run home and make a little more progress. Going to caulk the lower/inside seams, and get the top on.

One more shot. I'm really digging it this way and can't wait to see the flush mount sub. I'm going to flush router it all the way to the top/bottom, so there'll be a little open spot on each end. Might not make sense, but I'll have pics tomorrow. Had to deduct .32^3 for the extra baffling, so box is right at 3.2^3. Still going with the 31Hz tune unless someone thinks that 32Hz would be better. GF is counting down the days until the sub arrives and was asking me about her electrical system and will it be ok. I told her she'd get some dimming at full tilt, but I don't think she'll play it that loud very often. Yep I gotta hang onto this one

Triple baffle in all its glory. Had to have a few "dumbbells" help me keep it in place.
-
Top in place, so it's ready to pull apart and glue/screw together. That's all for now though as I have to run out and ref a championship hockey game...ugh. Plan to get it put together tonight, and cut out the driver opening tomorrow.
-
Ready to drop the top in place. I'm doing a triple front baffle and will flush mount the sub.
-
Top view of the 3" wide port, 42^2 opening, 31Hz tune.
-
Cheapo Craftsman table saw makes everything come out nice. Top will fit flush with NO problems.
-
Going together nicely, other than some bonehead who painted the wrong piece black. Notice on right, I "thought" that was the left wall of the port.....
-
Countersink bit FTW. Set of 3 was like $5 at Harbor Freight.
-
Lot's of drills makes things go MUCH faster.
-
Too cold outside to use the brad nailer, so I did the screw & glue routine. Harbor Freight clamps are awesome for $4.50 each.
-
Glued the port pieces together first, so they could set up while I'm doing the trial assembly. Roundover on end of port looks screwed up in the picture, but it isn't.

One more screen shot. I've only done the basic adjustments to the PJ and I'm more than happy, so I haven't bothered to mess with color settings. I will say that a movie that was shot poorly will be even more noticeable on a big screen. Things like artifacts, poor focus, etc... But something like MI: 3 is stunning beyond belief. Still need to get a popcorn machine, but other than that I'm VERY satisfied with what I put together for less than $5k.

Pics don't do justice to the image quality or size of screen. But it has amazing detail and impact. Viewing distance is only about 12' or 14' if reclined on the couch, so it's "almost" too big, which is just right for me. GF was very supportive of the idea of getting a projector and enjoys it as much as I do. We usually do 1-2 movies per week, so it's been a very worthwhile investment that brings a lot of enjoyment.

The "little" center channel that could. 95#'s of audio bliss. VERY life like reproduction of sound and insane volumes when I'm in the mood.
-
Pic of the "sweet spot" and JBL S center doing rear duty. Had to sell off the KLF-C7, but this one keeps up with no problems. Again room is a mess as it was in construction mode. LOL

Optoma H31 projector. VERY impressive picture for $700. Didn't get HD as I only watch progressive scan DVD's. To me the shear size is what gives the most impact. Pic is right after I ran wires through the wall and mounted it.

Ordered the cloth from Dazien. Total cost to build was about $100. 92" diag and from 12' away it's BIG!!!
