    Welcome to the IHoP

They're gone because their representatives continue to act in a completely unprofessional manner on practically every forum they're on and we refuse to support such conduct ...

A 1.73 GHz Pentium M is about equal to a 2.8 GHz P4, so it would be about 40% faster than your current desktop ... That is technically multi-tasking, but it is very light use (unless you're actually doing a virus scan), so you probably wouldn't benefit much from a dual core processor and you'd sacrifice at least an hour in battery life ...

Well, the difference between the 1.73 GHz and 1.86 GHz P-M is usually about $150-$200 itself ... A big part of the reason why that laptop is $500 more is because of the GeForce 6600 Go, which probably makes up about $250-$300 of the difference ... Adding another 512 MB of RAM is only $75-$80, so getting a computer with 1 GB of memory isn't a big deal ... I'd say that, if you wanted to go with something that had a little more life and versatility to it, this would be a good choice ... http://www.toshiba.ca/web/product.grp?lg=e...rt=4512#spectop It has the Centrino Duo processor, which technically is a little slower and less efficient now, but it will offer significantly better performance a year or two from now when software developers begin to take advantage of dual core processors. It has a GeForce Go 7300, which is a good graphics engine, so it will handle 3D fairly well and it has 100 GB of hard drive space, which should be plenty for music and work files.

I don't quite understand why you want those two laptops since it sounds like you will never use what you're paying extra for anyways ... Perhaps this http://www.toshiba.ca/web/product.grp?lg=e...rt=4001#spectop which is similar to the Toshiba in your first post, except it's $500 less. The reason I suggest it is because the difference in processor speed is small (7.5%), you don't seem to have a need for the graphics card, and almost everything else is the same. Just remember, computer technology advances so quickly, that you're better off getting something that meets your needs now and upgrading in 2-3 years than you are to spend a lot now to try to "future-proof" it ... Future-proofing PCs is a battle you just can't win, unfortunately ...

Personally, I'd go with a 15.4" screen as you can get a lot more computer for the price, plus 17" laptops have quite a few drawbacks (reduced battery life, awkward size, signficantly heavier, etc.) I'd recommend ... CPU - Pentium M Memory - 512 MB or 1 GB GPU - Integrated Screen - 15.4" HDD - 80+ GB @ 5400 RPM Without doing a lot of looking around, these would fit your needs adequately - http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku....&affixedcode=WW http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku....&affixedcode=WW The T2300 is a Centrino Duo processor, which is more hype right now than anything ... it will offer signficant performance gains in the future, but it'll be at least another year (if not more) before you'll start seeing the real benefits. Basically, you'd be trading off battery life and $$$ for slightly better multi-tasking performance (which it doesn't sound like you'll do anyways)

Pentium 4 = terrible laptop processor, so I wouldn't even consider the HP just for that reason ... What are you going to be using it for ? Any 3D gaming, 3D modelling, or video editing ? Will you run it on battery power often ?

    Welcome to the IHoP

New TV looks a hell of a lot better than my old TV, although I'm discovering that most of my movies are 2.35:1 (aka letterbox), so I still get the black bars at the top ... What fvcking genius came up with that idea ? Other than that, this day is going horribly for me ... I'm supposed to be at work right now, but I can't because some old b|tch took my laundry out of the dryer, so it's still wet ... I couldn't find a DVI > HDMI cable for a decent price, my debit card wouldn't work when I went to buy a component video cable, it's snowing, power is out in town thanks to a car accident (hell to drive through), etc. Add on top of that, when I plugged in my TV this morning and turned it on, it tripped the breaker and scared the fvck out of me ...

On the bad news front, I've lost 15 lbs in the last 2 weeks, my appetite has gone downhill, and I woke up with pain in my abdomen ... I really hope this isn't my Crohn's starting up again because I just had surgery 1.5 years ago ... I was expecting at least a few years, if not more, of pain and symptom-free living ...

And of course the biggest difference (which should help you up in Canada) is watching hockey...the woman says, "oh wow, I can actually follow the puck!" I bet she misses Fox hockey, eh ? I'm aboot to set this b|tch up and see how she goes, eh ?

    Welcome to the IHoP

Ended up getting a Toshiba 26HF85C (26" Widescreen HDTV) because it was the only TV that fit my stand, plus it was heavily discounted ($400) because the store is no longer going to carry CRT TVs and it was the last one they had left Thumbs up to Toshiba for putting the speakers on the bottom instead of on the sides; that's the reason why every other TV I looked at wouldn't fit ...

    Averatec??

Toshiba makes nice laptops ... The new Sony VAIO screens look great and are fairly inexpensive (compared to the 2005 models), although I've noticed that last year's models had quite a few issues with dead pixels (I work at a computer shop now) ...

    Welcome to the IHoP

No chit, I can't buy anything ... In the last 3 days, I've wanted to buy: TV LCD Monitor Receiver Speakers MP3 Player TV Stand But no one has what I want at a price I'm willing to pay and the salesmen are absolutely no help ... and, like I said, I've applied at these places and some of them even had the nerve to say "Your product experience is a little weak," so it really pisses me off. BTW, the TV was a no-go on Sunday because the dimensions on the website were wrong (GG Sony), so it wouldn't fit my TV stand ... In fact, none of the 27" TVs will, so I need a new one but the only one I've seen for under $200 that's actually decently built and has all the features I want is $130 ...

    Welcome to the IHoP

I don't understand why I can't get a job at a car audio or home theater store yet I know 50x more than everyone who works there ... "How's the noise floor on this receiver ?" "Noise floor ?" "Is there a hiss ?" "I don't know" "Can you give me a demo ?" "It's not hooked up right now." "The wires are all there." "I don't know how to hook it up." "How many optical inputs does this receiver have ?" "Uhh, let me check ..." ... "It has 2" "Do you have any with 3 ?" "Why do you need 3 ?" "For my DVD player, PS2, and computer." "Why don't you just use computer speakers for the computer ?" "I don't know, for some strange reason, I think my thousand dollar Wharfedale towers sound better than my crappy Logitech speakers." "What's wrong with Logitech speakers ? I have some and I think they sound great." "Is there anyone else I can talk to ?" "They're all busy right now." "Okay, well, when you talk to them, tell them to hire someone competent, then give me a call and maybe I'll come back to spend money."
  21. I gave up on car performance sites a long time ago ... Me - 6x9s = most overrated speakers ever Him - They were designed to have the clarity of a six inch speaker and the bass response of a nine inch speaker and as such have a compromise between the two, but only for the sake of fitting them into narrow parcel trays. Me - You have no idea what you're talking about Him - I'm only a musician with 15 years experience (Drums/Guitar and Keyboard), a partly qualified electronic engineer and have some of the most discerning ears of anyone I know. That's why people come to me to (correctly) set up their instruments/EQ settings/ and fix/install gear. I think that's qualification enough. Do you have a problem with 12" subs as well? How about 50W amplifiers? I ask everyone the same thing: An Audio Engineer busted his guts to get a music track sounding the best he could on expensive and "neutral" reference speakers, so why have you boosted the bass and treble to +10dB and cut the mids to -5dB THEN hit the "loud" button boosting it all by another 10dB? Of course it sounds rubbish because the speakers are reproducing DC signals (amplifier clipping) when music (as seen by a speaker) is an AC signal. Maybe that's why your speakers seem overrated Jmac, because you're asking them to do something they aren't designed to do? Other Guy - owned! *chuckles* im sorry, but i love 6x9's. they offer great crisp responsive sound with a good amount of low end thumpage. hard to go wrong really.
