I do this all the time.

Did I miss something?

Looks good Adrian.

You're dead to me.

I can no longer call you my friend. Maynard is God, hence Undertow being the Bible, and him owning Merkin Vinyards...

Technical death metal drummer, if you like fast, technical drumming. I got to see them and Cannibal Corpse in the 80s. RIP Chuck Schuldiner

I expect DFI to get more complicated and to have higher pressures and such in the not so distant future as well. Timing the duty cycle in such a way to control the flame front to achieve an even more thorough burn will help power and emissions but of course those are byproducts of efficiency. From what we are seeing the strategies are extremely diverse. Firing injectors into an already burning flamefront to boost power and cool the cylinder, to firing injectors during the power stroke to enhance performance and fire off the waste in the manifold and cats, to firing injectors late into the compression stroke for economy in a cruise situation, the possibilities are endless. But the diagnostic strategy involved in such complex fuel map schemes are daunting.

This is efficiency in a common ICE. FWIW direct injection allows for greater control of fuel mapping, and is not hindered by the time in which fuel can be fired into a cylinder. With traditional port injection we were limited in the timing by the valve opening. Now, with DFI we can fire the injectors no matter where we are in the cycle. While we do see 99% of all fuel burned, we also need to keep in mind that we see ~80% of our energy lost in waste heat, frictional losses, pumping losses, etc. This is not efficiency.

When I think emissions regulation I think about it hurting efficiency. You might be right that the focus is now having less unburned fuel, but I ALWAYS think of catalytic converter, restrictive EGR and DEF. Most of actually hurt MPG. Efficiency eliminates the need for any of that. Those are bandaids. Exactly. For decades car manufacturers have been slapping components on to reduce emissions, rather than engineering the engines to be more efficient. Complete, efficient, combustion produce only 2 compounds, H2O and CO2. Unfortunately we have hundred of other factors that reduce how efficiently combustion occurs, and this adds HC, CO, and NOX emissions to the mix. Increasing efficiency also increases output... so we have a bonus here.

Any idea when more stride in aerodynamics on bigger vehicles might be made? It seems like so much effort is focused on smaller cars than anything else. J Don't hold your breath, unless you are willing to deal with alternative fuels. Size savings means weight savings which translates to better fuel economy.
-
No real need, but thanks. Honestly my focus is all on propulsion, and what we need to expect over the next several years. Things like direct fuel injection, which is proving thus far to be a nightmare but it appears to be the future, and alternative fuels like CNG, as well as (obviously) hybrid and electric car designs. The classes were on advanced technology vehicles, and it was pretty cool. I was happy that the main focus was hybrids. As you know, I have laid all my bets on hybrid vehicles being the future. Apparently the general consensus is that I am right. Clearly we are going to be on the lookout for more aerodynamic vehicles, lighter weight vehicles, etc. Structure will be extremely important.

I love the new Regal GS. I would like to have one, but I can't see the $40K for a 4-banger. Same with Lincoln and the MK-Z.Sad how expensive all vehicles have becomeExpect them to get worse thanks to CAFE standards. I just spent time in class discussing soon to be upcoming vehicles, and thanks to the new CAFE standards we can expect the price of new cars to climb $7-15K by 2016. 54.5 mpg by 2025, This ought to be interesting... It would be easier if the emissions were more relaxed. Not really. If you think about it if the vehicle is that efficient, it should not really be emitting pollutants.

Look into the S&W M&P Shield. If you have big hands you may prefer the 2+ round clip. It is fantastically reliable, very comfortable, and not fatiguing in the least for such a small, light handgun. I have one, and am considering it in a .40S&W for a little more knock down power. My wife loves the 9, and wants it when I snag my .40.

Sweet, what mag? 6-24X50. It is a bit soft at 22-24 compared to my buddy's Ziess, but his glass was $300 more. I can't complain at all. When I upgrade it will be a Vortex Razor. 4.5X27X56... but it is a pricey piece of glass at just a cunt hair over $2K. Super clean, super simple to use...

gonna grab my youngest a Savage model 14 in .243 for Christmas. I think my Vortec will be a great fit for his rifle, and I will step up a bit by next spring... using Vortec glass again, obviously... unless I elect to spend more on Nightforce.

Great glass for the $. Your input was appreciated, and obviously heavily considered. The Vortec glass is exceptional for the $ and worth the extra money over the Ziess...

So I bought the Vortec Viper. It is a kick ass piece of glass. The gun is rock solid at 400 yards, no issue for deer. I may be considering a bit better glass for long distance varminting. I have a field I can go to with wood chuck and coyote at 500 yards. I am anxious to split a dog in 2 from 500 yards with a 22 round... Thanks everyone, for the input.

Don't If you enjoy beers, never buy cheap. Enjoy a good beer, the buzz is better, the hangover is less, and you will appreciate it more. I am currently 4 of these to the wind and bought up the last 5 4 packs that my local store had in stock. Stop at 2, as it is very strong, but enjoy a nice, high dollar, less punishing buzz of a good drink. This is in my top 5. Seriously. It is a fucking gorgeous stout, just fucking brilliant.

Oskar Blues Ten FIDY imperial stout is the new brew for the evening. Don't let the can fool you. It is the best new beer I have had in months. It is a heavy, heady, pitch black stout that is worth it's fairly hefty $15 for a 4 pack. It pours midnight black with a thick, heavy, sweet head that is strong on toffee, coffee, and chocolate. While it claims a 10.5% alcohol content, it does not taste heavy of alcohol which is a good thing, as I feel that too often imperial stouts seem to try too hard to taste like heavy alcohol. But honestly, it is going right to my head, leading me to question if they fudged the numbers a bit low for packaging sake. I poured it in a mug, and really wish it had gone into a snifter so I could really enjoy it's deep, bittersweet aroma which is perfectly complimented by it's bittersweet taste. This stout is a must have until Southern Tier get's off it's ass and releases it's heavenly Choklat.

Can't believe you never saw the images of them coming apart.

Sorry Matt, it was just too easy. We all know the truth.

Short changed?
