How does this sound for a HT setup?

You need to keep similar voice between the center and mains at the least. To run the 5.25 Alums for the center and surrounds, and 7 inch polys would be a terrible mismatch. I don't feel even a good crossover set-up will adequately correct for the issues. The likelyhood of the center being to forward and male vocals overpowering is almost assured. Also of note, I noticed you mentioned crossing from 2 and 3K... Well the 7s will not fill the bill if you are looking to cross between 2 and 3 K, they will get very sloppy. Rolloff may be a bit sooner and more abrupt than you predict. Port those mains... they are begging for it. TLs would be great if you were looking for primarily a music system, but it seems as if you want HT. HT will benefit from the slightly exagerated boost and agressive attack of ported mains, rather then the overly warm smooth TL sound. The drivers are very decent units, and hard to beat for the price really. Set up a good crossover and you are ready to fly.

    Box Building Tips

My old boxbuilder totorial. I have learned a few things since then, and should ammend some stuff in it, but the basics are still there. I have both simple tool enclosure builds and complext tool builds. There should be a method for any skill level, and most tools as well. Lot's of cool little tricks

    Home Audio basics

7-800 offers alot of options on a reciever. I have owner Sony, Sony ES, Denon, Pioneer, and Pioneer Elite. I like the Elite the best. Denons are very capable, but I find them entirely too forward in the upper frequencies. They tend to be a bit bright. They are very feature rich units though, and worthy of their awesome reputation. Most Denon owners are rabid fans. If I couldn't afford a 28-- series or better, I would shy away from them. You can find alot of them on e-bay and some discount websites (I have several with good referances if you would like). I wouldn't venture any further back than the 02 models though (for example, a 2802). If you don't like a forward system, this may not be the best way to go unless you have a fat wallet for something like B&W speakers. B&Ws do great on the denons because they are so laid back up top, but they remain accurate. I prefer a slightly bright speaker combined with a laid back reciever myself. I find that the accuracy is much better on a set-up like that than the above situation... and at a greatly reduced cost . The Pioneer Elite is what I am using right now (VSX45-TX). This unit is massively feature rich, and offers more controll than any sub $4000 reciever I have seen. You don't see this type of controll untill you step up to super high end recievers and pre-pro setups. The unit is warm and that allows it to be used with more common speakers on the market that tend toward the bright end of the spectrum. Other units I considered when I went out this spring and bought my Elite were the Marantz lines, Rotel, Yamaha, Onkyo and Harmon Kardon. The Yamaha and Onkyos were so bright I wanted to cry. The guy at the shop was like... "hear the detail?", I'm thinking, when did siblance become detail ? Harmon Kardons just didn't impress me. I went to one shop where they were demoing the unit to me and it just cut off. I was like WTF? It was bright, but it was fully featured. Come to find out, after doing some research, the HK units are experiancing alot of problems the last 2 years. I have heard tales of there being so many sitting out for rebuilds that they cannot get them back to the consumer for a couple months... Not too good. Rotel was great stuff, but a bit over your range. Good Rotels are starting at a shade over $2000. Marantz deserve similar accolades. Very, very nice gear. The sound was one of the best I had auditioned, but they just weren't quite as feature rich as I liked. If you get an opportunity to listen to these units and like one, let me know. I can share my experiances with you on most of these units. I spent almost a year looking and listening to about 50 differant units before I chose mine. I did a huge amount of research as well. Speakers? If you want inexpensive speakers that are great units, just go buy some Paradigms. Don't waste any time. They are a bit bright, but a tiny bit of tweeking and you will be a happy camper. What great little units. DVD? Look into Pioneer (or the Elites). Pioneer is offering some Multi-disc units that modders are tubing. Under $200 for a unit that plays any available format (yes, DVD-A and SACD too) that is so well built that modders are adding tube output stages and selling them for a grand!!! How can you go wrong? Best Buy even sells them, and when they go on sale they are rediculously priced at like $125... forget that, it is currently $99!!! here I went with the Pioneer Elite DV45A. It has similar capabilities with more outbound processing that better suited my needs. MSRP of $700, but they can be had for under $400 if you know your dealer well enough Good luck!!!

    Cool Colors

http://www.sound-foundations.us/HomeTheater/intropg1.htm there's the rest. Pioneer Elite, Pioneer Video, and all custom speakers built and tweeked by myself... all Adire speakers of course. I haven't updated it because I building a new site, so the dualie and surrounds are not included, but the rest is there. The B15 should do very well in HT apps... Port her and tune LOW, with about 4-500 watts... BOOM!!!!

Hey all, it has been a while since I have been here. Lookin great. Any new toys anyones messin with? I built me a few new HT goodies, but the car is the same. Anyways, looks good. I'll be back more often. Life just got too complicated for a while there

    favorite brand names

Do I need to say it? Adire. Every speaker I currently own is Adire. Car and home... everything. They are the best sounding speakers I know of. Pioneer for processing. In my Home I use almost all Pioneer Elite, and Pioneer Video. In my Car, Pioneer provides HU duties. Extremely reliable, heavily optioned user interface that is kept fairly simple, and a very smooth laid back sound. Car amps, Cadence. Again, great sound, amazing prices and heavily featured. My poor amps have taken a TON of abuse, and never even get warm to the touch. Amazing value, amazing output, amazing SQ, amazing features.... Do I really need to go on?

    Cool Colors

Holy Cow!!! Looks like alot has been going on. New Homes, new rides, new gear... Darn!!! Nice ride there 97droptopZ... looks like you need to change the name . Whadda ya think about the RP 3 ways? mrray... Got any pics? Sounds sweet!!! Steve... I don't know if you guys knew I built all new surrounds (I think I built them since I left) Adire AV5, Audax TM025F1, rear ported Ribbon Mahogany covered with Tung Oil. These are amazing. And Dualie... Dual Koda 10s in a big sealed cabinet, over 500 watts... Amazingly musical and crushingly loud when pushed. Again, Ribbon Mahogany coated in Tung. The unit is coupled to the floor with spike feet of course. I am sold on the differances they make. I have built several new Media centers too, but I have no pics hosted yet. And I currently am designing my first all tube driven, dipole delivered pure stereo audio system. This will be a couple more months, but the results will be worth it. I am looking for modded Diva Blue Sky amps (I have found them for about $2500, but I have seen them in the past for about $1700... I'm holding out for a good deal). They will be XBL2 driven (of course) and I am still stuck on the Raven Ribbon tweets. Dan Wiggins is trying to get me into some 50 inch planers as he is doing a similar design, but I am not a fan of array type installs. The stage is way too tall, and I fear that may be the case with the 50 inch planers, and a sub/midbass/midrange unit and a monsterous planer... As Is, I may be too tall and have to step back to a strong mid (Koda8) with a midrange (can't talk about it yet ). I just need to get them assembled and determine which Ravens I will be sticking with. Dipole is new to me, but I have been extensively researching it. So keep your eyes open, It is coming.

    IN SHOCK....

I spoke to Steven just a bit ago and he informed me of what happened. What a terrible, terrible ordeal. Nick, I want you to know how bad I feel about this. You wish there really was something you could do. I hate theives. Good luck in dealing with this nightmare. Dealing with the insurance company is one thing, but the violation one feels after such a thing is even worse. My thoughts are with you. Seth

    gain and bass boost settings

I will have an awesome gainsetting tutorial complete with burnable CDs with tones, and a printable instruction manual soon. CAT is going to be hosting his gainsetting tutorial which is, in my book, the very best gainsetting tutorials available. Give me a couple days to get it running and I will submit the link here

    Adire Koda released!!!

Primarily SQ in nature really, but it does do a bit better than a Shiva in similar alignments. That may not sound like much, but remember we are talking about a 10 inch versus a 12 inch woofer. All the motor is really in the topplate, not too much magnet on the driver. The depth is better suited to automotive applications, and I know Steve will be happy to see that .

    HT cabinets, practice done

Well, as you guys may or may not know I am in the process of the design, and construction of my HT cabinets. The Adire Kit81 units in a ported box using flared vents is in order. I have spent weeks practicing with clear lacquer, as a how to. I have a ton of wood scraps out in the garage I have been practicing differant techniques, and materials and I have found my method. I have tried schelac, varnish, laquer, polyeurothane, and tung oil. I have tried several methods of application of each and I have found my very favorite to be Deft Lacquer, with a natural brush. I have a piece out in the garage with 8 coats of lacquer, but the final product on the units will be around 16 coats. All hand sanded, compounded, and polished. The result will be a mirror like shine over a complex woodgrain. South American Crotch Mahogany is the wood of choice, but next Saturday I am going to Charlotte to a big woodworking show, and depending on what is there, I may have a change of heart. Here is the Crotch Mahogany. It is a veneer, and a pricy one at that. The enclosure assemblies below are small versions. We basically attempted a few ideas and wood types for the design, as well as differant inlays. We are working to find the best cutting method, and joining method possible. Rather than using an expensive veneer, we simply used an old cherry veneer we had sitting around. The inlays are black walnut, and likely what we are figuring will be used in the final assembly. I have several woods to choose from, including purpleheart, bubinga, zebrawood, and bloodwood, but I feel the Black Walnut will suit my needs best. As the lacquer is added to the units below, you will see the grain climb out, and the Black Walnut become almost dead black. These first pics are in the rough, sanded fitted, all ready for trial lacquer coats. While they are miniature, they will be exactly the methood and appearance of the final product. I think we will be using the 1/4 inch inlays rather than the 3/8. I will lacquer the units to pull the grain and color out, and be sure I want the fine inlays, rather than the heavier inlay. Here is the face of the unit with 1/4 inch inlays. Here is a detail of the inlay, from the end with tthe cutaway showing how we set the inlay. The face of the 3/8 inlay. Another face shot, with a bit of an end view. A detail of the 3/8 cut. We found this method to be the best for the wood we will be using (3/4 MDF). We cut a straight 45 degree cut, and flip the board over and using a 1/8 blade, we cut a spline into the edge. We then cut the 1/8 inch plywood to fit the joint. A very slick and simple method that works very well. Now I will show some comparisons for the units, side by side; Side by side Angled Again Detailed end comparison. The 3/8 is bigger than the 1/4, in case you were unaware. The wood block I am holding on the top of the box is the mahogany. All I did in the pics was change the angle of the wood, I did not flip it or anything. Comparatively, you can see the color differance between the cherry on the box, and the Mahogany block. Notice the color change as the mahogany is turned. Mahogany/cherry 1 Mahogany/cherry 2 I will add some pics as the Lacquer draws out the color in the woods... Let me know what you think of the design thus far.

    New eD A's!!!

the problem is companies never get the subs in time by the due date. theres always some delay. ask me how i know True. I am not a fan of preorders. It seems like they never come around when the Mfg says they will. Now, I'm not saying it is ED's fault that the preorders are dealyed (or any other companies). I'll wager that at least 85% of these issues are buildhouse or shipping issues. But how irritating is that? What if I am the guy who drops $400 on this new sub due out in June, and it doesn't come... Then in September it is still not here... OK, cool, the buildhouse built an entire run of drivers out of spec. But where does that leave me? It's not the companies fault the buildhouse f-ed up, but I was promised the driver 3 months ago. Nate, I'm not hating, just discussing an issue that gripes me. It is not just Ed either, don't get me wrong on that... it is the whole preorder thing. However, you mention of them being a more mature company may be true as far as time in the industry, but let's not forget the people who waited for promised backordered As all the way untill the end of their run. Have they become more mature in the last few weeks? Also, if they were so mature they wouldn't need the customer's money up front to build the subs... One of the reasons I am so glad about what BEtter Audio is doing, is I as a dealer don't have to deal with preorder bit<hing. As currently the only authorized dealer for BA, I am privy to all their info (non-disclosure pending, so no questions please ), that is otherwise unknown the the public. They will offer no pre-order, and no release dates. The information will be nominal. Suddenly you will wake up one day and they will be there. Adire with their new line of subs... no pre-order. In fact, no info. What can you tell me about the new drivers by Adire? No hype, no preorder, no complaints by the customer... These are mature companies... And they are still young B)

    Shiva Box

Expect the 10s really soon. I expect an update within the next couple days. Adire is preparing press and website info right now. Some drivers are in the hands of some local Seattle area Adire dealers. The dealers are giving RAVE reviews. As more information becomes available I will pass it on to you, either in the public forum, or in a PM Steve. I know you have been waiting for a while on this, but at the same time I don't want to spam the forum. Don't be surprised if you see bigger drivers in the future. I am not sure when they will be released, but as info comes available, I will share.

    Shiva Box

We are ready to begin a new line, The Koda subwoofer line. Kodas are going to be an entry level XBL2 driver. Rough estimates are from $175-225 per unit. The first release (just awaiting shipping cartons) are the Koda 10s. The units are similar in scope to the Shiva, 17MM Xmax, small/medium size enclosures. My buddy who works at Adire has heard them in .5 feet or so, and said the 10s will work a Shiva for it's depth in the small bpx, but maintain the amazing transparency inherant in an XBL2 driver. Obviously efficiency is better on the Kodas than the Brahmas, but I expect them to be close to the Shiva. On that note, I expect Pmax to be similar to the Shiva as well. Information is not formally released yet, but I am allowed a teaser, and this is it. We are expecting availability as soon as shipping crate designs come available (looks VERY close guys). 10s are fired up and ready to go. We are going to be running additional lines in the near future. Sizes will be made public when I can. As soon as more information is allowed to be released, and press photos have been taken, I will forward them on to you, at Steve's request. Another teaser for you, right from Adire's website... In the immortal words of Mills Lane..."Let's get it on!!!"
  24. Tracy, I saw some info in here the other day about the newer amp lines. I was hoping for a refresher and also wondering along the lines of AB power... 750X2 @ 1 or 4 Ohms or so, maybe 1500 @ 2Ohms. Basically I mant alot of controll, like one of the new lines seemed to offer. I am going to be powering 2 Brahmas (I needed a little more umph ). I am hoping to keep them in a foot each so power needs to be about 750-1100 or so per driver. I like the Cadence Z1500, or a pair of Z9000s. I am even kicking DEI around (2400D) but it is a D amp. I really want an AB. Also I was wondering if you might hit me some rough prices up. Thanks Bud, Seth

    HT cabinets, practice done

Flawlesskid's first input on the set (copied from www.caraudioplanet.com thread "New Toy" in the HT section) I had to ask him though, what is more important, your future or audio . Kid's these days
