That's a fucking joke. I know several very good mechanics who can't find work. The guys being snatched up as soon as they graduate are going to Econo Lube and Tune and other such low paying, low intellect gigs. The bottom feeders. Those of us who really fix cars are not needed as much as cars today don't need the service work they used to. Gone are the 12,000 points, plugs, condenser jobs. They are 100,000 plus intervals. Gone are the valve jobs every 60,000 miles. Engines go unopened for 250,000 miles. Valve issues are so rare that I wind up diagnosing misfires that have been to several shops without a fix, only to find a burned valve. What used to be commonplace is no more. Hell, in my shop only 2 of us know how to build differentials. Seriously? Sure, most guys are pretty much morons, and they earn $36,000 annually. They have no real experience. Thanks to how reliable todays cars are, they will never gain any worthwhile experience, and the 6 figure tech is becoming no more. It is an industry that is falling by the wayside of parts swappers.

I am not generally a fan of museums either. For the most part most of the art sucks. I prefer galleries or showings where I can view one or 2 artists I like. The Vatican Museums were amazing. He has been a favorite of mine for a long time. I used to really enjoy his stuff when I was on acid. We took a trip to the LA County museum for one of his showings and dropped about an hour and a half before we went in (crowds on acid never bothered me). We were mesmerized for hours.

Looks like he still has one in Laguna. The last museum I was at was in La Jolla, but it was sort of a let down, but I didn't go there specifically for the museum either. Who, what? I stay in Laguna Beach every time I go out to my office. Seth was talking about Wyland. Looks like he mostly does marine paintings and a little abstract. Id like to see more abstract and surrealism. Yeah, Wyland. The thing I liked was his use of color. The deep blues and contrasting bright sealife really kicks ass in person. He had 2 galleries in Laguna, one right on PCH and another off a little side street. Next time you are out there spend a couple hours in his gallery. Some of his work almost seems corny, almost like he is trying too hard to be cute, but his serious work is awesome. Interesting that you would like surrealism. I would say my 2 favorite more modern artists are Dali and Wyland. Yeah, total opposite ends of the spectrum, but both just do something for me when I look at their work.

There are a few galleries on Cannery Row. One time when we went Wyland had an exhibit there, but if I am remembering correctly that was at the aquarium, I don't think he had a gallery or was using someone else's up there, but I could be wrong... that was better than 15 years ago. I lived just outside Laguna Beach for a few years and he had 2 galleries there. I always loved his work, so we visited his showing up there (on Cannery Row).

If you're staying in the city Cannery Row (yes, as in Steinbeck's novel Cannery Row) is a touristy section on the waterfront. There is an overrated aquarium there (it's OK, but nothing spectacular), and lots of shops, restaurants and bars. It isn't really an amazing place, but it will kill some time and you'll find plenty to do for a day.

The town of Carmel is pretty cool. That is where Clint Eastwood was mayor. It is just south of Monterey. Laguna Seca is also not far from Monterey. When I lived in SoCal I used to take chicks up to Big Sur all the time. There was an awesome log cabin I would rent for a long weekend. There was a pretty awesome restaurant just outside of Big Sur right on PCH, built into the hillside called Nepenthe... Best views you will have out there, and the food was pretty good. Pebble Beach is a waste. We did the 17 mile drive once... don't waste the time or money. All you do is roll through a high dollar neighborhood and look at the ocean and homes. Seems like we paid $10 or so to make the drive. We saw otters, big homes, a golf course and a cat get hit by a car and start convulsing and flipping all over the road like a fish out of water. I ran it over to end it's misery and my girlfriend freaked out on me. The lone Cypress is interesting. Not really a must see, but a pretty awesome photo op if you like taking nature pics. Don't know if you have ever seen a pinecone from a Sequoia or a Redwood, but when you see them on the side of the road it is pretty cool. Big ol' SOBs.

While untrue years ago, this is definitely true over the last 10 or 15 years. We have been making a lot of money off them lately.
