Did you end up doubling the MDF or leaving it at a single layer all around?

Do I have this right? (sealed/ported question)
RAM_Designs replied to Dan208's topic in SPL & SQ / Fabrication
The gain in output below say 45-50hz when using a ported box is definitely noticeable...no doubt about that. Just model up some good sealed and ported woofers and see how more efficient a lower tuned ported box is in those lower frequencies. Now it all depends if that's what you like. I personally like a low-tuned box over a sealed one. Just modeling up an Exodus Shiva-X in 1.5ft^3 sealed, vs a 15" Dayton HO in a 3.5ft^3 at 28hz box: the Dayton is 1db up at 60hz, 2db at 50hz, nearly 4db at 40hz, 5.5db at 30hz, and they cross paths at about 19hz. F3 of 38hz for the Shiva-X vs. 26hz for the Dayton. -
Don't base port area on box size, base it on potential air displacement by the woofers in your install, and by the frequency you're tuning to.
-
3-3.5ft^3 with a 30-32hz tuning should suit you well if you're looking for good low-end.
-
I'd definitely add some bracing since the port is free-standing in the box and not helping brace anything at all.
-
But it is more dense than plywood. Plywood is more rigid though.

saz1500d v.1 v.s dd m1a?

Again, I'm not trying to say that what I did is perfect, because I know it's not. It's just what I had to work with at the time. My teammate was going to give me the M1a to run, but looked at both amp's internals and figured the Sundown would work better...sure enough it did, in my instance. -

The 0-400 is using the 4ohm rating(actually dividing down from 1ohm rating). -

I'm sorry, I mistyped and meant to say maximum instead of minimum. I had the gains wide open. Sorry for the confusion everybody! But actually, they make plenty of power with an 8V HU. I actually have the gains on all of my amps turned all the way down right now. -

Please don't take anything I'm saying about your results personally. I'm not trying to beat you up here, and honestly wasn't going to say anything about it until ibanender decided to use that as more "proof from the real world". So it sort of got thrown into the gauntlet. But really, even with your added comments there, it doesn't really prove much of anything. I know you're not trying to attack me personally, you're a good dude. I'm just trying to clarify what I did since I know people will be wondering. If it makes any difference I was able to repeat the same score with the 1500D time and time again...I didn't test the M1a more than once because I didn't see a .7db turnaround happening. -

If it's worth anything all gains were set minimum and the burps were a solid 30 minutes apart with the truck running the whole time inbetween to ensure everything was fully charged. Only one burp per amp. HC2000 up front and Batcap2000 in the back, 160amp stock alt. I was trying to decide which amp to use in a certain class(0-400). -

It's optional, you don't have to. -
This, it's right on their site.

Q's are nice, no doubt.

Run the positive wire from the front batt to the rear batts and then to the amp. Ground from the amp to the rear batts and then to a ground on the vehicle. -
This. The amount of air potentially displaced by the woofer(s) in a given install is the main factor.

That's definitely not going to cut it if you plan on running 2500 watts. The amp will get past the alternator voltage and go down to batt voltage pretty easily. So if you're wanting to limit voltage drop, you either need to beef up your alt or get a couple of batts to put near the amp. If you run that amp hard with the kind of electrical, I can easily see you dipping down to the 10's. -
I pre-drill and have NEVER had MDF split on me...ever.

What voltage if I may ask. Started at 13.9(hot summer), and dropped to 12.8 after a 3 second burp(stock alt). -
I wish I would have hung on to my 15" TC VMP's from 5 years ago...

My spl setup metered higher with the 1500D than the M1a by .6db, both being ran at 1/2ohm. -

And don't forget to duct tape around the sub. -

I'd definitely go the route of the single 18" sub. You can do sub up and dual ports firing back...would look very nice in my opinion. Add a flush baffle and you have a pretty sweet box. -
Specs stayed pretty close, but the V2 will like a little larger box than the original because of the higher vas and slightly higher qts.
