SA Series Coil Cooling Test II

Same copper coil that has been in the subs since their introduction. This test was done in December 2010 with all the newer motor / spacer updates.
  3. We did an updated one today with an SA-15 never dropping power under 700 watts and even increasing to close to 1000 watts near the end : "My clamp meters weren't set quite right up until about 1:45 and we come online reading power at 838 watts (remember we have been seeing power for a while already this is just where I get a good reading)... at 2:45 dropped to 754, at 3:45 dropped to 725, at 4:45 dropped to 722, and at 5:45 dropped to 709 -- so here we are at about 40% over rated power on a sine wave with only 15% power drop over 4 solid minutes. We decide that the driver hasn't been strained yet so crank it up to 790 again at 6:01 then again to 851 at 6:20 then again all the way to 970 at 6:36 and we let it go for 30 seconds until 7:05 when we shut it off to cut the sub down NOT BLOWN. Over 5 minutes of sine wave torture... coil is dark but not blown. Not many drivers in this category would stand up to this test." We have about a minute and a half before I get a good reading at 838 watts... power was in the 500-600 watt range for that time period. Counting this time period we did around 7 minutes total power on the driver. Coil was only darkened once we cranked it up to the 900+ mark well into the test... practically no coil smell until that point. So... essentially you have to batter the driver constantly with 20-50% over rated power on a constant sine wave for 5-7 minutes to darken the coil... not even actually causing thermal failure. Put some thought to that on what an equivalent amount of thermal stress would be on music... especially with the driver moving. I got in real close in the video so you can really see how LITTLE the driver is moving.

    SA-8 v.2 Prototype Completed

That is due to the dual spaced spider -- one spider is glued to the basket, then there is a custom tooled ring, then a spider on top of that, then a steel bolt-on ring on top of the whole assembly. Actually fairly complex but gives us more lateral coil stability!

    SA-8 v.2 Prototype Completed

No -- I plan to keep the SA-10/12/15 pretty much as they are for some time. The lines above the SA will have their own basket tooled up at some point... I have a ton of renderings completed for the new frames (nothing public yet) in 10s, 12s, and 15s. They are a bit too expensive for the SA line but will be used on all our bigger stuff when completed.

    SA-8 v.2 Prototype Completed

No it's not -- we used a similar motor structure on a prototype SA-8 recently but this is the first time this motor will be used on production. It looks somewhat like the SD-2 motor due to the shape of the back and top plates, but is it's own unique structure.

    4x SA-8s + CRX -- Part II

So far: 3790 watts @ 152.6 dB with new box. At the moment it won't support more power (two small SP1000 12v batteries and stock alternator) -- I may drop my 16v batteries in tomorrow.
  9. The finalized frame tool with production finish is done so I'm starting a thread to hold photos of all the parts as they finish up... we should have the rest of the tooled parts done the week of the 24th and the motor likely before that. So as I get images of the final parts I'll put them up!

    SA-8 v.2 Finalized Parts Thread

Just in last night -- soft parts and spacers are done !!! * Our surround tooling was modified a bit for the wider surround landing on our new frame. More glue surface area to the frame! * Custom gasket with our logo to fit our new frame. * Modified magnet boot to fit the revised motor structure * Venting spacer like the big brother SA-10/12/15 * Custom tooled ring for our spaced spider setup (notice through bolt holes for the steel bolt-on ring) * New custom tooled spider - 10mm wider than before! With DUAL round leads -- we mean business! ----- Prototypes should be done next week... then we'll have them early next month. Once the prototypes are built up we can get an idea of the final cost on these guys.

Fun little "SQ" project I'm starting today

~1000 should be pretty safe on them.

    SA-8s SQ Victory !

Indeed -- the 4th order I made for some SA-8s used 0.25 sealed each

Yes, NS v.2 + cost of the copper sleeve.

Ours are a standard phone cord -- if the other amp is as well then it's fine.

Fun little "SQ" project I'm starting today

I've been driving around with the first prototype for some time now and I really do enjoy it quite a bit -- I haven't made one with the "beefier" coil yet but I believe that it will really perfect the sub and will likely be what I offer when these go up for sale... once I get a moment to work on my own stuff again I'll build one with the other coil to test. I intend to make these publicly available for sale once the next run of NS v.2 motors arrives.
  16. The solder or the terminals may have an issue right at the terminal -- test on the tinsel leads directly.

Havoc 12 not hitting 35hz+ well

The box may be loading on the vehicle and lowering actual in-vehicle tuning -- making the low-end much more powerful than the upper end. Not necessarily meaning no upper-end output, just too much bottom end. Moving the box around may help -- also try disabling or increasing the LPF in case the knobs are not accurate.

    Z v.3 Cones / Spiders In Stock

The NS-15 cones should be back in soon.
  20. Parts are all here... as we start making them we'll get more finalized specs on each size and coil configuration. * All of the cones together * 18" Cone * 15" Cone * 12" Cone (woops... got it dirty) * 10" Cone All cones have a stitched surround. ----- * Upper left (18" - 9 1/4") -- Upper right (15" - 8 3/8") -- Bottom (10/12" - 7") Z v.3 15s and 18s will run the long coils (60-65mm) -- we'll have shorter ones for the 10s and 12s (50mm) to keep mass balance in check (will risk some ticking with the longer coils). All of them are beefy 8-layer aluminum USA made voice coils on black aluminum formers. * 15 / 18" coil * 10 / 12" coil (NS v.1 equivalent coil)

Is there a build time for the SA-12?

There is no build time -- only the 12D4 won't ship immediately (will ship next week) as we had a small outage until we unload the container today.
