I am a little late to this thread, so what would the mounting depth of a 10 or 12 of the v3 design be then? I would love to have 1 killer 10 or 12 in my truck. The 10" will come in at 7" depth, 12" a bit deeper

Anyone have T/S and other specs on these guys? Looking at picking up a used one for my Dad Thanks!
-
I would do the pair of 10s... the 10s have an F3 of 60Hz IB, and that is as low as you will run them You'll have higher efficiency and more output potential, as well as a 4 ohm load per side for midbass.
-
Ricky, These are not being made in the USA. Several other designs that I am working on are to be made in the USA, but not these. Although, I will likely use USA voice coils in this model to get higher temperature grade adhesives.

Corey, Lets try a four way setup, shall we? Why not a 12" SD-1 per door for midbass? They throw down IB with the moderately high Qts and low Fs... cross them over at 60 Hz and they will have ridiculous amounts of output. We would run these up to 100 Hz. Two per door if you can fit them... even two of the 10s if that is more practical... seriously! There is no beating a LARGE midbass driver for realism. --- PHL for midrange... try their 8" model from 100 - 2500 Hz. These are some of the best high efficiency lower-midrange drivers available: http://estore.websitepros.com/1736754/Detail.bok?no=50 You won't need more than one per side... due to the efficiency the rest of the system will be playing keep up. --- Then... how about a pair of Dayton 2" Aluminum dome midranges per side from 2500 - 5000 Hz. These have been compared to the best of the best midrange drivers on the market: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cf...tnumber=285-020 --- And... the DLS Iridium tweeter is my favorite of all time... keep that, please You may need a pair per side to "keep up" with the other components. --- Don't buy any batteries or alternators yet... wait until I make some calls.

I almost crapped when I saw that... What I would do with the mids is this -- use eight of them for midbass and four for midrange! Or... step up to a single 10" or 12" midbass per door. Also... may I suggest PowerMaster D3100 batteries? D3100 > Kinetik 2400.

Okay... here is the deal. I got an estimate on what the new v.3 version would cost me to build. It is 225% more expensive to make than the v.1 prototypes... yes, seriously. This is what would be gained: * Double the linear excursion of the v.1 prototype * Going from a two layer to a four layer spider * 150% longer voice coil than the v.1 prototype * Switching to a flat-wound coil * 1" deeper motor structure, impossible to bottom out the spider or the coil * WAY more power handling... chances are the new design would handle double the power of the v.2 prototype * Lower Distortion This means... at my current best estimate... that MSRP pricing would be around $349 - 399 for this speaker. This is MSRP price... pre-orders and actual street price would be lower. I need some feedback before I continue. Keep in mind this speaker is leagues ahead of the pictured protos in every way. It's bigger, has more x-max, has more motor force, is more durable, AND will have less distortion.

Refurbished amplifier
sundownz replied to cjack's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
I sell refurbished amps from time to time. I'm not sure how other companies do it... but I load them down as hard as I can and test them after repairs to make sure they perform up to spec. If they are tested in this manner they should work very well for you -
You want audio? This is pretty flippin' crazy!

That guy is my hero. Wow... -
Since the v.2 protos were not as I had hoped... and I have to get new protos anyway... I'm going to step the design up a notch. Stay tuned... should have v.3 protos in a month or so, they will be visually different @ over 1" more depth. I specify visually different since I made 5 changes to the motor in v.2 compared to v.1 and the naked eye couldn't tell any difference on the outside (unless you can spot a 2mm increase in depth). Will likely bring them up a notch in price, but they will be worth it

Thread cleaned up again. The listed items above, still for sale.
-
The sale is still going on, there are more SD-1s to go.
-
No idea... X12 design is not even finalized yet and I don't have any CVXs here to test.
-
Being that the Nightshade design is not even final I can't make much comparison... but it is in the same "genre" I suppose, in that it is intended to be a loud, high power handling sub that you can still listen to.

1) I don't have a solid price estimate yet. Probably something like $549 MSRP on the 12" and $569 on the 15" model. I would have 10" and 18" sizes at a later date. May or may not have an introductory sale, it all depends on supply and demand. 2) At the moment I am looking at making them in Dual 1, at least at first. 3) They are made for SPL but can be listened to daily, they aren't "pure SPL." 4) The goal is to be able to run an SAZ-3000D on one daily... and two for competition purposes. Or 2x 1500Ds and 4x 1500Ds respectively. They are still in development and MANY more things may change about them before they come out, which is why more details aren't available on the forum in general

Hehe, good one... their OEM pricing is a tad high these days. Anyhow... I'm talking with the current factory about why the samples aren't working out like I want. If I can get that figured out I will try another revision with them... if not I will take it somewhere else.
-
The efficiency really blew me away... I've never hooked up any speaker from any company that moved that far with that little power input... I was shocked. When we did listening tests we had my SAX-100.2 @ 8 ohms and we were able to reach full x-max in the large sealed box we had. Needless to say with 400 watts in a proper sized sealed box you would be golden.

I received the second revision prototypes today. The design is how I want it to be now... but quality control does not seem to be up to my standards at the factory I have been working with. I will likely be looking to build these elsewhere unless this factory can get their act together and meet my requirements. The way it looks I will probably have to get these made somewhere else and delay them further... but I'll keep you guys up to date!

Im using this box with two 10" SD-1's and it keeps moving around in my trunk. Is there anyway to make the box stay in place? Also, what should I set the subwoofer output to on my headunit? I have it cranked all the way up now and it sounds good but I don't want to screw anything up. You can use metal brackets to screw it down... or sometimes Velcro works too. The SD-1 will likely be fine if you aren't bottoming them out, and you would know as it's pretty loud

Alrighty, I will check it out as soon as it gets here.

We did some sealed listening yesterday... it was excellent. Our sealed box was a bit large so mechanical power handling was low (it was hitting 16mm+ with 250 watts)... it had great low-end extension for a 10" driver and was very clean and tight -- blended well with the fronts. We couldn't judge output so much as my current sub-box was kind of blocking effective entry into the cab as we sat this box in behind it in my trunk. Just finished thermal testing... played @ tuning in my test ported box with 500 watts as measured on my Fluke Clamp meter. I let it rip for 2 full hours @ 500 watts and it's fine. Motor was very very hot at the end of testing and the basket was hot but you could still touch it, unlike the motor which was painful to touch. Did not seem to get any hotter after about an hour and a half... stayed about the same temperature (guessing by feeling it). That is a thermal rating... these things are super efficient and the only way I could keep it away from full x-max @ 500 watts was to play right at tuning in my ported box. You really don't NEED that much power... but quite simply, it would be damn hard to toast the coil on this thing as it would be physically letting you know to turn it down WAY before you could burn up the coil.

If I have not responded to it then not likely.

That's a market that could use some shaking up. Maybe a Mag-loaded one to go after SVS and REL, and a BM one to take on Hsu's offerings... The new BM sounds awesome, by the way, Jim We did some sealed listening yesterday... it was great. I will be thermally testing it today or tomorrow... torture test style. And yah... Nick and I agree. The Mag should destroy most offerings out there today... especially anything reasonably sized. It simply sounds fantastic in a home setup... Nick paired a Mag 15 with his line arrays and that sounded amazing.

Indeed... several extremely unique items are for sale here. The SAX-250.2 prototype is the only one that will be made in the "original" SAX casing. Both sub models are totally unique and there aren't any others like them.
