Ok, so this guy from Calgary ordered up some subs a little over a year ago for his home theatre setup. A little over a month ago, he phones me again telling me they aren't enough. We start sharing info and I find out he was the Canadian car audio champion back in the early 90's. So after a 17+ year hiatus, it just so happens that Big Dave is planning to get back into the car audio scene once again. He calls himself 'Big Dave' for just reason - he's bigger than me and has that deep, husky voice you can only associate with men of larger stature. Eight IXL-12's, four MLI-65's and a 2000 Ford F250 bought primarily for car audio, this should be a very interesting build. He's also into a lot of customizing (read fiberglassing, totally modding of stock environment, etc. etc.) Here's a shot of his trophy "army" with the car that made it all happen - circa early 90's.

no not that i tryed everything i could think of. does SSA store cover this? if not they dont have them posted on the SSA store anymore so does that mean i cant buy another one Hove, if you can, take the driver out of your install and hold it up to eye level. Check to see if the surround is unlevel. Snap a picture of it if it is and shoot it to me. Thanks, Mark

I've been nursing this for a number of months now. It will be in the assembly stage within weeks. Pictured below is the voice coil of the next Mach 5 build - wound by yours truly. This will eliminate power compression so it will simply get louder with additional power applied. In the center (of the first pic) is a 3" coil to give you an idea of its size.

A recone is certainly possible. Shoot me an email (to the mach 5 site) with your shipping info. Best, Mark
-
Yeah, I'm afraid all of the 4 Ohm coils from the original MJ are gone, unless I come across a box stuffed in the corner with one in it. Sorry.

So friends down under can now take advantage of decent pricing on Mach 5 products from Affordable Drivers. They have received their stock and are now shipping: http://www.affordabledrivers.com.au Best, Mark

Yeah, go larger if you can.

New Mach 5 Build - Zero Power Compression
mrogowski replied to mrogowski's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
Well I couldn't find anyone locally who can do a clean cut through my plate so I will have to modify my lathe to cut it. This is probably the biggest thing holding me back at this point. May end up just biting my wallet and eating the few hundred for the parts I need to get this done. Coil is coming along. Currently sourcing out aluminum plate. Its coming.... -
New Mach 5 Build - Zero Power Compression

It will be like nothing you have ever seen in a speaker before! Just thinking about this blows my mind. Now now Sean, don't be saying things like that. You know better. The build will be somewhat 'different', but it still boils down to the same thing - a diaphragm going in and out, moving air. Now that things have settled down a bit, I can work on this. I'm not proficient enough on the lathe to be messing with chunks of steel so big so I'll be taking them to a shop to get cut up. I'll probably take them in tomorrow, then wind the final coil this weekend. We'll see how things come out. -
IXL 18.2.2 - Good for daily ground pounder? VS HDC3 18's?

Haha! Pretty good -

Thanks for posting the info Samuel. -
See if you can find some way/method to round over that partition - like using a large piece of doweling cut in half for example. Maybe snag a 6" sonotube and cut that in half. Also look at the inside corners - see if you can find an easy way to round those as well. Maybe look into the small sonotube or even a mailing tube you can glue to the corners and add a bit of bondo to smooth out the edges. In for a penny, in for a pound!

too big for sealed, too small for ported --> for IXL 18
mrogowski replied to deucelee's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
yup, do it. -

If its the deep lows you are trying to achieve and you have the box volume to do it, go ported. -
This is certainly a different setup. I'll be watching the outcome

Nice to see the 12" IXL v2's on the website.

I'm not sure if you could handle all of the excess DBz the Funky Pup dust caps could produce. I'm not liable for any deaths. -
Looks like you have a big hole in the corner of your door you will have to seal EDIT: I watched the last video and laughed out loud

Sounds like an interesting project. Good luck with it.

If it works for you then great.

I might have what you are looking for. Shoot me a PM.

More details please...

That's a lot of work there...

New Mach 5 Build - Zero Power Compression
mrogowski replied to mrogowski's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
Frankly its not. I took a week off work to get some speaker stuff concluded and well, guess what happened? I will find a bit of time this weekend to work on it however. -
If your looking at running that much power why not look into the SPL line from Mach 5? Yeah, it seems like the goal is volume, so a little loss in extension for volume and power handling seems like a good tradeoff. Going by thermal power handling throws up red flags to me.. depending on the box alignment you are most likely gonna hit mech limits before you hit thermal (with music at least). You can model that if you have an idea what way you are going with the box (size and tuning).... If you plan on tuning high and burping with tones or something similar (i.e. definitely running into thermal limits before mech) then an SPL oriented sub makes more sense imho. If you are going for SQ, get the ixl and don't go crazy with the gains. Headroom is a good thing (the amp will be operating at low distortion and not heating up if you aren't pushing it to the limits). It seems no one thinks of this in the car audio world these days, and I'm not sure why.
