So here are some results: EDIT: Double-checked my measurements - new volume posted First test box was a 130 litre (4.6 cubic feet) Sonosub with a 20Hz tuning. Tests were done near field (microphone 1 inch from driver and port). Yellow is the driver output; green is the port: As you can see, there is some pretty good output down low. Once you factor in room gain, output in the nether regions should be quite audible. Listening to the Sonosub, we found that the driver sounded quite good up to 120Hz. Here is the impedance curve:

    Yellow Tops, Blue Tops,

Great, now you're going to make me do research, after trying the easy way...

You realize that by saying that, you are holding me to it now. Yeah sure, swing by Saturday early aft...
  4. Actually, I lied. The measurement I gave you is from the basket step to the terminal. Please see shot. You will notice the tapered spokes that extend to the edge. Depending on just how thick you have your spacer, you may have to increase the hole size to compensate. I figure if you go to 5 1/4" you should be ok if you use a 3/4" spacer. Best, Mark

Sorry its taking longer than I anticipated. I will have full disclosure this weekend.
  6. Ok, I see what you're doing now. You are looking at 5" between the edge of the magnet to the edge of the terminal strip on the opposite side. Best, Mark

I think they have just been released so not many folks have them. I'd say wait awhile before you start hearing reviews.
  8. The MLI-65 has a mounting diameter of 6", so it won't work for you. And everything you heard about them is true... Best, Mark

Yup, sounds about right. Should work well...

Scott is right - go with either a 15" or two 12's. Since you're using a Sono, a single 15" should fit the bill nicely. Of course, that would make your Sono much larger than you anticipated... m

Well, building Sonosub is certainly much quicker. You can have a ready-go "box" in a couple of hours. No need for bracing since vibes are dispersed evenly around the tube. Just slap on end caps, drill some holes and you're done. Looks, placement and size are a few of the downfalls to Sono's. I have not played much with PR's in the past, and info on exactly how to tune them is somewhat limited. You can probably start with punching the numbers into WinISD Pro to see what you get. Perhaps someone else can chime in here... Here's a link to some info: http://www.diysubwoofers.org/prd/

    SPL-12 Volume Test

Hmmm... Keep in mind, this is DIY, and not all folks are engineers. Perhaps that is why you end up seeing such blanket statements like those posted by Tom and others (there are plenty as you are aware - I too am guilty of this). The more I think back to my R&D days, the more I recall getting rather vague explanations from the VP of Engineering - certainly not because he didn't know the technology, but probably because it would take too long to explain everything behind it. I was therefore left to seek clarification elsewhere and draw my own conclusions. I think Tom does his best to explain the concepts in layman language. I personally wouldn't chastise him for the odd hiccup though. I do however find your posts getting deleted over at HTGuide a bit strange, and rather abnormal. Maybe he was just having a bad day... So, I/we shall wait until next semester to see if you are successful in delivering your lecture. Perhaps you can then explain what exactly is happening. Best, Mark

Interesting, thanks for posting. I would love to hear the basis behind what you stated. I, just like others, am always open to learning something new... Oh, and why do you think ThomasW is a moron? Best, Mark

They are in stock now. If you live in the US, order through SSA - they also include shipping with the price. I should have those response graphs done up this weekend. Best, Mark

Its getting late so I don't think I will be able to do the testing today. The EBS enclosure is complete and the car box is close. I simply cannot deny Sean his request, so here are a couple of pics Here, the 18" enclosure dwarfs the 15"
  19. Glad to hear it. The build looks good too!

I'm sorry, I have no experience with Fi's products. Ok, I take that back. I was able to get my hands on a 15" BTL but not to listen to it. BTW, the pricing you see on the website includes shipping. I guess I should make that more clear eh?

    SPL-12 Volume Test

So long as everything remains linear there should be no issues. At the risk of sounding like a salesman, 2.5-3 would be fine. You won't lose much if any at all. I chose to go big because I want to use the box for future testing...

    SPL-12 Volume Test

Well, I can tell you from my limited listening in the Bonne what I *didn't* hear: - Flabbiness - Muddiness - Mellowness - Strain Of course, one would say those first three aspects are box/install dependent. The volume I was listening at was more than what I would ever apply daily, and the sub did not have any crossover applied to it. I can say with confidence that this is a hard-hitting unit, provided the right power is applied to it. With 2kw you should make it pretty happy.

    SPL-12 Volume Test

I was planning to do a frequency response of the unit in my car, but I'm not sure just how much info that can/will give you. Every environment is different. I could do up a nearfield response to show the actual response if that will help...

Its net volume, and no, it slid in there nicely. The box is deeper than it is high. m
