SPL-15 Pre-order - You're nuts if you don't go for it
mrogowski replied to mrogowski's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
Well, the pre-order is over. Thank you to all who thought about acquiring an SPL-15, and an even bigger thank you to those who actually did. Best, Mark -
Well, good luck with your project. Hope you like them.

If you live in the US, just head to SSA's store. It is listed there. Best, Mark

Mach5Audio IXL 18.4 goodness , EBS style.
mrogowski replied to TheEAR's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
Yeah, Mr. Ear has quite the thing going. Should be very interesting once everything is done. You should share some of the things you are doing Arthur. -
Yeah, the terminals. That was a mistake actually. Nice spring-loaded ones will be coming.

Thank you Tommy. I can grasp a majority of what you said, but just like the many AES papers/reports, I will have to read it a couple more times for it to sink in. And since it is 6:30am, I have yet to devour my first cup of coffee What you state here is in fact, similar (with a bit more added) to the aforementioned. Keep it coming if you are so inclined to do so... Best, Mark Oh, and I doubt anyone thought of you as being a 'know it all'.

This build log will hopefully provide enough information to those folks who are interested in the SPL-12 for high volume car audio use. The criteria consists of: - Mach 5 SPL-12 wired for 4 Ohm use - 3.8 cubic foot bass reflex enclosure tuned to 46Hz - 2001 Pontiac Bonneville - Crest CPX-3.0 PA amp providing 3000 watts power into 4 Ohms - CD source with all necessary test tones - TermLab ****************************************************** Here starts the frankenbox Frankenbox meet frankendriver Box inside trunk Details Box tuning turned out lower than expected as the impedance measurement shows below. The port tuning ended up being 40Hz and not my expected 46Hz. For interpretation, the dip between the two humps is the box tuning. The lower hump is the peak of the port and the upper hump is the peak of the driver in the box. Happy and Disappointed I knew the Bonneville wouldn't produce stellar results as it's a highly damped environment to begin with and separation between trunk and cabin is above average. I chose a frequency of 42Hz to burp as that was the highest output frequency in my test sweep. I took three sweeps which obtained 139.9db at the highest peak. During the first two burps my Crest power amp kicked out and during the third, the breaker to the garage blew. It was at that point I knew I wouldn't get anymore out of my current setup. The amplifier output peaked at 108 volts AC to produce the highest volume level. So overall, I was disappointed that my system could not produce more output, but I was happy that the driver took the power with ease, and seemed like it was looking for more. If I had an extra 2000 watts I would not have hesitated to use it on this driver. After the tests, I played a couple of songs from the DB Drag CD to see how the sound quality was. What came to mind immediately was the bass being very solid and tight. I noticed no overhang whatsoever. The bass actually left me feeling excited as I listened to it, if that means anything to you. Needless to say, I found myself turning the volume higher and higher, only to trip the power amp again. It certainly won't win any SQ competitions, but what I heard, I liked. I can only conclude (in my own biased way) that this driver will perform quite well for a daily, but make sure to have an ample supply of power as you will need it. For the pros, I leave it to you to decide whether the SPL-12 would work in your setup. I see myself using one in my car.. Best, Mark

Stick with 3/4", you'll be fine.

A number of folks have been asking when the SPL-15 would be available. Given the existing sales of the current SPL-12, I am finding it difficult to justify the added expense for another driver in the line. I am however, open to doing a small run of SPL-15's provided there is commitment from those folks who are interested in acquiring one (or two or three...). To picture of what the SPL-15 would look like, imagine the beefiness of the SPL-12, only in a bigger version. There, simple wasn't it? So, those of you who spoke of, or asked about an SPL-15, belly up to the bar and let's talk about it. Best, Mark

Make sure you get that extra special gift from the wife....

Numbers are beginning to climb. Let's keep this going.

That's the problem with shipping such heavy units. Shippers tend to "drop" them rather than "place" them.
-
Ok, thanks for clearing that up. I give full credit to the man who had it before you. He obviously kept it in original condition. You know who you are - thanks a bunch!! m

Finally... Ok, to set things straight here, this unit was sent to Stratus from someone who promised to perform a full review but never followed through. After several months, I finally asked the man to forward the unit on to him so Stratus could follow through with a proper testing. The pictures Stratus posted warrants clarification so those who read this can fill in the blanks: 1.) The SPL-12 is wrapped in a thick plastic bag with four layers of cardboard that sits over the surround. It is then topped off with a flat cardboard piece to protect the cone. 2.) The SPl-12 comes with an aluminum trim ring for owners to switch out with the rubber gasket. It is normally placed on top of the protective cardboard cover. 3.) There is a thick styrofoam coating in the box to protect the driver from excessive handling. I am not sure if it was in the box Stratus received, but despite whether there is damage to the wood crate or not, the driver is protected from damage. All that aside, Stratus, please continue with the review - whether good or bad. Here's hoping there was no abuse done to the unit before you received it. I will shut up now. Best, Mark

Curious. Do you think you will be able to tell the difference between the BL figures by listening to the two drivers? Best, Mark
