Well I've been messin around with WinISD for the past hour, converting units to metric and back again, etc. All I can say is, I'm completely lost. In case you haven't read any of my other posts, here's my equipment: (1) 18" Fi BTL N2 (1) AQ2200D (1) XS Power D1200 Those are the only things I have purchased so far. Right now I'm trying to figure out what I'm gonna do about the box. I think I'm gonna go with a slot ported box, tuned in the upper 30s/lower 40s. Only problem is, the process of designing a box that won't sound like shit is a tough task that is starting to become overwhelming. First question: How do you know what size box to put into a calculator such as this one if you don't even have it built yet? Isn't that defeating the purpose? Seems awfully backwards to me.. I'm obviously missing something here. Next question: How much volume of the port counts towards the volume that the subwoofer is seeing? For instance, in the following picture, does the space marked in black count for interior cubic feet or space of the port? I'm gonna have a lot more questions, and I hope this is the proper place to ask them. I'm building the box with my stepdad this weekend. He's excellent with woodworking, but he knows as much about subwoofer box building as I do (basically nothing).

If I build to these dimensions: Width: 52 Height: 22 Depth1: 18 Depth2: 18 Port Width: 5 Port Length: 8 It says the tuning frequency will e 31 Hz. Will someone with a more precise calculator run those numbers and tell me what the actual tuning frequency will be? Assuming these dimensions are external, so you need to take into account wood thickness and find internal dimensions then net volume, using 3/4" wood? For finding tuning, you need: net volume, port width, port height, and port length. You did not post a port height. On the RE calculator it would use the default height of 20.5, after subtracting the upper and lower .75 I beleive I'm sorry, but where exactly was I disrespectful other than my responses to Audibel Customs? I realize I went overboard there, but reading through the posts I don't see any other instances where I was being disrespectful.. I acted that way towards Audibel because he used terms I didn't know, and I couldn't get on WinISD to look them up because I'm on my phone. Emotions took hold there, I'm not denying that. I just can't find anywhere else where I was being disrespectful. I'm not insulting you, I'm actually asking where it seemed I was being disrespectful so I'll know in the future. Let me know.

Im really sorry everybody, I didnt mean to come across that way. I took his answer as an insult, but I guess it wasnt meant to be taken that way. I was trying to get help from here as well as people in my town, and opinions didnt match up. Im on a phone right now because the power has been out in north alabama the past 3 days, so we've been under a lot of stress as it is. I just let the stress take over and I took it out on somebody that was just trying to help.. I hope you guys will take back your "little shit" comments, because I'd like to be a part of this forum and meet some of you guys some time in the future. I really mean everything I'm saying.. When I read you guys putting me in my place up there ^^ I felt horrible and realized the mistake I made. Im sorry Audibel Customs and anybody else I might have offended. BigCProductions, I figured you were insulting we from the very beginning.. I'm not sure if you were joking or not, but recommending 4 4'x8' sheets of mdf was a little extreme.. I ended up only using 1 4'x8' sheet and 1 4'x2' sheet. Whether you were trying to help or not, did you really think that much mdf was necessary? So I hope you guys took that apology as sincerely as I feel it. I hope you can forgive me.. I just let my emotions get the best of me. The box is finished. I'll post up pictures as soon as the power comes back on. Once again, I truly am sorry for what I said. I hope you guys can forget about it and forgive me, because God knows I'm gonna need more help later on, and this site will be the first place I go.

I think the reason SSDs are "are looked down upon" is because Fi is known for their high spl woofers. Not many people know of the lower, more SQ oriented subs that Fi offers. SSDs rule!

You ought to cut that smart ass attitude out man, I didn't ask for your fancy wording that a normal human has no idea what it means.. Got off of my topic please and I'll recieve help from real people. And besides, I'd rather put the x in the 29cg chamber. Thinkin of goin with a 47h slant on the 63 curvature. That's exactly the reasoning behind my first post because I knew you wouldn't understand or take the time to google basic t/s parameters and terms needed for designing and using any box building program. And no a sealed enclosure will not give you a flat responce curve if it is not the correct volume. Congratulations... What do you think about putting the x in the 29cg chamber with a 47h slant on the 63 curvature?

What do you guys think? Most people say that the re calculator is incorrect on the tuning freq.(seems to tune to high) I plugged in the above specs you gave into the calc I use and it is giving a tune at 38 Hz Well, shit.. Which calculator do you use exactly? Do you know the actual formula for determining tuning frequency using only those units?

When did I say I was straying from their recommendations? Do you mean tuning frequency? I'll probably be keeping it in the 36-37 range.. Surely straying from 32 to 36 won't cause the world to end.. Won't cause the world to end, but it may reduce the frequency range you can play. I gotcha... This is a little confusing... The lower you tune, the better the SQ/lower the SPL correct? But if you tune lower, does it make it possible to play lower notes? The tuning frequency is just where the volume of the notes peak. As in the decibel curve. Could you elaborate a little? I don't know what the decibel curve is..

The actual wood working is not the issue.. My stepdad is excellent when it comes to fabricating anything involving wood. The problem I have is tuning the box.. We'll figure something out. But thank you for the link. I'll check it out as soon as I'm on the computer. Storm knocked all of north alabama's power out.. We could have no power for like 5 days.

Thats the one I recommended in my first post Definitely. We were all there at some point. Youre supposed to plan the dimensions before you build the box, so youre all good. With Torres' box calculator, you play around with numbers (possible dimensions). Gotcha. I think. Prepare to have your message box filled About how big of a sheet of mdf is about right for an 8 cube box? Also, what size wire would be optimal for connecting the sub to the amp? I was thinking 12 gauge but I'm not sure..

1) I would recommend you to use Torres' Box Calculator. Its a lot "cleaner" and easier to use imo. If you have any questions with it, feel free to PM me. 2) The more the total port displaces, the less internal airspace is in the box. The left of the black line you drew is where the port ended. I haven't started building a box yet... Do you understand how confusing this is to someone who has ZERO experience with this? How am I supposed to know the box dimensions if I don't have a box

My stepdad is building it with me. He's very experienced with woodworking. As a matter of fact, he just got done putting a walk-in closet in our office, turning our house from 3 bedrooms to four so it looks better on the house market. So I'm not going in this alone. He can handle all the cutting/making angles/bracing etc.. I just need help with the actual calculations.

Not necessarily. This was just one that came up on google images. Do you think there is a better choice? Only a couple sealed boxes. Never built a ported one.. Which explains why I am totally lost...

I've decided to go with a slot port, but I have a couple of questions that need answering. First question: When the "vent length" is calculated in a simple calculator such as this one, what exactly does it pertain to? Should it be this length: Or this? (To be sure I don't get confused, we'll call this one "picture 2")

Is your setup sub up or sub forward? I might have to PM you later on if I have any questions if you don't mind; we basically have the exact same amount of space to work with.
