Ok can someone please explain in detail what the differences are between a 15" woofer and a 12" woofer in playing ability, frequency, and tuning
-
ok i ordered two 12" black "Fi"day x series woofers. should i put them in a ported or sealed box? i can locate the recommended volume. if ported would be better what should i tune the box to. also what should i set my crossover frequency at. i will not use bass boost at all in fact my bass on my headunit will be -2 and 0 on my amp. depending on what i tune my box to i will set my subsonic filter 2hz less than that. i just want the most output possible from the woofers without risking damaging them

where can i get an aero port is it a premade round port

so far sub wise ive owned 8 sony xplod 12's (not all at once), 1 audiopipe 15, 1 kicker cvr, 2 fosgate xlc 18's (never installed them), 1 hifonics brutus 12, 1 jl audio w3v3 12, 2 pioneer 12's, 1 dub audio 12 (LOL), 1 lightning audio 12, 1 mtx 15, 2 kicker comp 12's, and 1 alpine type r so far amp wise 1 pioneer 1200d, 2 sony xplod 1300w, 1 jl audio 500/1, 2 power acoustik 300/1, 1 kicker zx300, 1 audiopipe 800d, 1 hifonics 1000d and to be honest the loudest setup ive had to date was 2 of the sony xplod 12's on the hifonics 1000d

well every box ive ever owned has been ported except for one and i know i like ported but they have all been prefab ones i bought the setup ive heard that i liked the most was two 12" kicker cvx's in a ported box on a audiopipe 1600d in the back of a blazer i loved it and since have been trying to get that much bass in my 2000 grand prix gtp i just ordered two of the black fiday xseries 12" woofers and i own a soundstream rub1.1000d amp and an alpine headunit i usually dont have much money to spend so have been trying to get there on a very small budget so far ive spent $440 on the amp headunit and subs all bought brand new which is the most ive ever spent on one setup and im really hoping theese Fi 12's will sound how i hope
-
ok thats what i will do ive got alot to learn and just read some of the forum rules and guidelines so i will try to search for most of my questions first and if unable to find then post a new topic with specific questions and all equipment involved thanks very much for your help and every one who shed some light on my dark car audio brain and put up with my rambling lol
-
could i get the output i want from a sealed or should i go with ported i know with a sealed i could run more wattage through them and have less risk of me killing them and would be easier to build but ive only had one other sealed box before and im not sure it will sound good well the way i wqant lol
-
HAHA you have a link to the12volt the site i was just talking about that had calculators
-
yes ive never made my own box before, but i have found a website that has a calculator. you enter the dimensions youd like your enclosure to be, tuning frequency, how wide, and tall of a port, and it will tell you how long to make the slot port. would that be ok or should i just build a sealed. will the sealed give me the output i want?
-
Well you came to the right place, and what subs did you buy? i just started a new topic for help with my woofers im afraid everything that everything ive ever been told about woofers is wrong which im not suporised i never get the same answer from car audio shops so ive been trying to piece together my own understanding with not much luck lol
-
i only ask all theese questions because i want to learn as much about car audio as possible and dont know where else to find the information that is correct and i want to get the most out of the Fi woofers i ordered without damaging them
-
so if a sub plays to much lower than the enclosures tuning it will suffer mechanical damage right?
-
there isnt a rating or something that says when this sub is in its recommended enclosure this sub can play as low as this frequency without being damaged? lol how have i gotten so far without blowing every sub ive owned
-
how do you know then how low of a frequency a woofer can play with out the driver being damaged
-
lol im an idiot so if a larger structure can oscillate with larger amplitude than that of a smaller structure why couldent it create a lower frequency than the smaller
-
ok then i have a new question lol sorry appatently i know nothing and need to learn more what does the fs rating on a woofer mean does it mean the lowest frequency it can sustain with out bottoming out and if so why do larger woofer of the same woofer have a lower fs
-
true but isnt it the less tight head in a larger enclosure allowing the sound to reverberate at a lower frequency?
-
well thats just saying that smaller speakers play higher notes and bigger speakers player lower notes which is apparently wrong i geuss? im even more confused lol
-
okie doke thats all i needed to know thanks but wait why can a bass drum which is larger than a tom drum play lower notes because its bigger im confused lol
-
so generally speaking say if lets use the q they are both in their recommended ported enlcosures in size but both enclosures are tuned to 35hz will the 15 reproduce the lower frequencies at a higher volume and why? is it just because the 15 has more cone area or is it that the fact that it is a larger woofer it can play lower notes than the 12 no matter the enclosure tuning
