confused :( Fi SSD10 or Sundown SA-10
jokers10 replied to JohnHinerman's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
I also have experianced the same PreFab box under the rear seat in my Dodge Quad Cab. It sucked, because you couldn't listen to the system with the rear seat down, and even though it says there is 6.25" of clearance, the basket and magnet had to be small to fit inside the box. What I ended up doing was building a center console box for two 12s. One good 12 in the center console would have sufficed. I was using cheap Infinity Refs, and it was good enough to get loud and clean. And bassahaulic is right, you can't underpower a speaker and blow it, unless you don't set gains right and run distortion through them, and try to compensate for the lack of power with more volume. But on the same token, it would probably be louder with a speaker that was more efficient. I recommend a custom box, and to actually be able to use that space under your seat for an enclosure, to first take it to a metal fabricator and have them deepen the under seat compartment. You could get quite a bit of room under there without sacrificing clearance at all. There are crossmembers that are way lower. -
I cut 40 lbs in 4 months from cutting out fast food, sodas, and walking 3 miles a day. The trick was to do it every day. If I had feet that allowed me to run, I am sure more weight would come off quicker. Try to plan each meal. Sit down and actually come up with a meal calendar, and then eat raw veggies and drink more water for snacks.

Hey followers of Sundown. I am thinking I want to use the SA-8 in my car. I designed an enclosure and am now looking for feedback before I jump in the Sundown pool. Let me give you some background of the car it is going in and the sound I am looking for. I own a 2003 VW Jetta GLI. It has the factory Monsoon sound system with an aftermarket Kenwood Double Din. The factory monsoon amp consists of an 8 channel amp running a component set in each door. The woofers are low in the door and the tweeters are in the A-pillars in the front, and by the door handle in the rear. It gets plenty loud, and is relatively clean. What it is missing however is some low range. I want enough bass to support the factory speakers with room for future upgrades. I listen to a large range of music. My most played artists would be Regina Spektor, Death Cab for Cutie, Eminem, and Paul Simon. I have decided to go with the SA-8 due to the size enclosure recommendations, and from the reviews I have read great output for the size of woofer. I want it to be light weight and somewhat low power because the factory charging systems tend to be finicky on the VWs. I am looking to bridge a Sundown 125.2 to power 1 SA-8 D2 woofer wires in series. My enclosure dimensions are as follows. Exterior measurements are: 23" wide, 10.5" tall, and 11" deep. The port will be a slot port 1" tall, 9" wide, and 20.25" long. This leaves a woofer cavity of 19.75" x 9" x 7". This is a .72 Cubic Ft cavity and with a .1 cube speaker displacement leaves a .62 Cube enclosure. This would put the tuning of the port right at 35 Hz. There won't be any additional bracing considering how small this box will be. (Picture is below. Couldn't figure out how to recess the speaker, but that is what I am going for.) My concern is 2 fold. Did I design an enclosure that meets the requirements of the SA-8? and will a 9"x1" port whistle in my trunk loud enough for it to be a problem? Any constructive feedback is welcomed. That is the balancing act I am having in my head. Larger port area means I have to increase the enclosure size to remain at the tune the speaker needs. Without a physical trial I don't think I can be certain of what will actually happen. I was able to borrow the wife's netbook to run WinISD, and the port velocity was just slightly higher than what was recommended. I have room for a bigger sub, but am trying to stay small to keep the weight down and the room required to make a suitable box for it. Plus I am only looking to replace the sound that is missing from the door speakers. I am sure I will eventually replace it with something larger, but I think this is what I want for now. But is anyone has any other experience with the SA-8 and can get that to me before I start building, it would be appreciated. Thank you for your input so far.

Forgot to mention I run a MAC, so I don't have the capability to run WinISD on it.

Here is the situation. Just bought a 2003 Jetta GLI VR6. It had the factory option for the Monsoon sound system, which included an amp in the trunk powering the components in all four doors. The previous owner put in an aftermarket Double Din Kenwood DDX418. It isn't the best deck but does what I need to right now. The mids and highs sound better than what I expected, but I am missing the lows. I am not looking to shake the neighborhood. I just want to hear a more full sound that can handle my varied taste in music. I listen to everything from Squirrel Nut Zippers, to the Gravediggers. What I think might work, would be pairing up a Sundown SAX 125.2 with a SA-8 with the dual 2 ohm voice coil. I would bridge the amp and run the coils in series to get about a 4 ohm load. I think they reccomend a .3 cubic foot box for sealled, and like a .6 for ported. I think I would end up making both boxes to see which one worked best. My question, is this a good pairing? Would the SA-8 be underpowered? Does someone have something better used or b-stock (Sundown only) that would fit my budget of $400?

Just found what I didn't like about the IA 5.1. It doesn't have a remote level control. I am married and have a son, and my bass level preference is way different than my wife's. Is she hears any boom, her ears only hears static and it bothers her. Sometimes when I have a cold, I can't talk to her too close because my voice gets lower. Going back to search for something Sundown. It would be a good day if I could find a Sundown 125.2 or even a 100.2 and 2 SA-8s (a 2ohm(for the car) and a 4ohm(garage)) for $400 shipped.

I did see that deal, and might pick that up. No real reason to go with Sundown only, except I have researched a lot on the Sundown brand. Also I noticed that the Sundown equipment normally doesn't stick around for long in the For Sale section. So if I want to upgrade later, I have an easier time getting money from my old system. I had some old Kicker amps, back when they were a decent brand. Because of what they have grown to, I could barely give them away.

Now that I look through the forum a bit more, I see a 500D in the works? Any release date set for that little monster?

where do you buy your wiring from?

Any verdict? I should be buying my welder soon (within a month) and will probably throw some 1/0 to get a discount since I will be spending $1200+ as is. -

Can we start getting pictures of the wire side by side? -

Hurry up and get this going. I am about to buy some wire for a new install. Great idea, and I am sitting at the edge of my seat waiting to see the outcome.
