The damage to the actual speaker is just on the surface...just a scuff. Looks worse in the picture. The woofer was in the back of a Subaru Crosstrek which has a very small cargo area. So it is 99% likely that the damage is from having things against the woofer while it was playing. I don't think it was a one time event that cause it but it might have been...something fell on it or something. The woofer has actually been unhooked since Christmas and I don't know how long the damage has been there. I haven't been driving the car much since November. My wife has. I've been driving the truck. Anyways, I pulled the system out of the Crosstrek yesterday because we traded it in on an Outback and that's when I noticed it. I guess I'll try the RTV and see how that works. The hole isn't all the way through so it seems it just needs patched to keep it from getting worse. I guess I'll see what happens....worse case I'll have to get a new subwoofer in which case I'll go bigger. This one is just an 8" Sundown Audio E8. Thanks for the help.

I pulled the box out of my hatch today to find that there's a hole in the surround. Not sure if it was ripped out or rubbed though from having stuff against the sub while playing. I was wondering if it could be repaired by me or would I have to send it in for repair, in which case it wouldn't be worth it since shipped and repair cost would be more than the $100 shipped I paid for the sub. Good excuse to move up to a 10" I guess...if I can't make the repair myself.

Ok...I have the subs and I want to start the box this week. I am not set on the aeroport yet so I was wondering if someone can someone help with dimensions for a slot port tuned to 40hz? Subs will be seeing about 700w RMS. Or at least tell me if this looks right for the slot port....height: 13.5" width: 1" length: 21" tuning: 39.90Hz Granted I am only using 8" subs but from all the pics of all the boxes I have been looking at....a 1" wide slot port just seems tiny. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh wow...I cannot even imagine what you are going through. Being a father myself there is nothing in the world I would think could be worse than getting that news. I am so sorry for your loss but at least it does sound like Sean is at peace now.

Some basic electrical questions...

I am getting ready to place an order from Knu for my wiring. I just want to make sure I get what I need the first time and it's the right stuff. First of all...do I need one or two runs of 1/0g power wire for my two amps? The mono block will likely be an AQ1200d at 2 ohm (870w RMS) and the other amp for my mids/highs will be no more then 150w x 2 @ 4ohms. So if a single run is sufficient, once I get the wire to the amps and I go to split...what size wire should go to the AQ amp? I am just wondering because I didn't see a dist. block on Knu's site that allows for a 1/0g wire to be split into 2 or more 1/0g wires for multiple amps to be ran with that size wire. I figure 4g would do for the smaller amp...I just want to make sure the sub amp is properly feed. One other question for now...terminal ends...is #1 the correct size or do I need larger? Thanks and sorry for the newb questions. -
Like it says...any thoughts on which is better? I can get either set for the same price for the 6.5" component set. This will be for my Jeep Cherokee system and whatever I get will see 100-150w RMS depending on the amp I get. I listen to pretty much everything but rap and country. I'll have two Sundown Audio SA-8's handling bass duty.
-
Also...how do I figure out the dimensions of a slotted port for a box for two SA-8's @ .6cf each? I figure tuned at or around 35Hz.
-
I listen to a lot of different stuff...generally rock, classic rock, techno/electronica, industrial metal, no rap or country though.
-
Also, what is the best tuning for daily driving (music)? I am about to commit to a pair of these and start building the box.
-
Can anyone help with port size and placement in the box. I used a port calculator and for 32Hz tuning it says I need a 3" port 11" long. Just want to make sure that seems right. Also, if I did want to do a slot port, how do I go about figuring the dimensions for that? Sorry...I've built lots of sealed boxes...never a ported box.
-
Thanks. That's where I am at now...trying to design the box. Not having much luck. I know it shouldn't be hard but I just want to make sure I do it right. The plan is to have the subs firing up and the port to the rear. Box according to Sundown should be .6cf per sub plus .10 for displacement so I was planing on a single box of 1.4cf. Just not sure about the port. The box will just be a simple rectangle box and the port I planned on using an Aeroport to keep it easy.

No kidding...I like it. Thanks for the intro to a new genre to me. -
It's a 2002 Grand Cherokee so it would be pretty similar to a 2007. So in a 1.5cf box a 4" port 16" long would tune the box to around 35Hz.

I generally listen at a comfortable listening volume but of course there are those occasions when you need to show off a little. I don't listen to a lot of really bass heavy stuff but I do like my industrial metal from time to time.
