Questions about my headunit and amp
gonzala posted a topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Hey guys, I've received good information in my other topic so I thought I'd come back for some more. Got some questions to do with the setting on my sub amp and head unit Currently I'm running a infinity reference 611a amp powering 2 infinity 1050w subs but I'm looking to move up to a single 15". my head unit is a pioneer deh-p80mp and I play all my music off my multi-media player via aux input but the devices output is really quiet so with the way my setup currently is, the maximum I put my head unit to is 55 out of 60. I thought that head units have a point at which they clip but I can't hear any distortion. So I don't know if this is a problem or not. The way the sub amp is setup right now sounds decent but I think the settings are kind of weird, like the low pass frequency looks high, I don't know why there is a high pass frequency but I think its the bass boost frequency and the bass boost is turned up to the max. From what I've read this doesn't seem all to right but I'm not sure any ideas? Also I have an oscilloscope at my school which I could use to set the gain I hope, but when I go to set the gain should I play the 50 hz tone through my media-player or off a test cd even though I will play just about all my music from my media-player? I also worry about the head units volume needing to be to so high because I've read people set their gain so that their max volume is at about 3/4 of the head units. The low pass frequency is set at the top a little to the right maybe sitting around 150 hz and as I said before the boost is at the max with the hp frequency at the top a little to the left at around 30 hz -
H/O alt question
gonzala replied to ssh's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Hey, fellow jeep owner here. I just put a 200 amp alt into my cherokee, while I did need to grind the mounting brackets a bit it went in without to much yelling and cursing. Bought it off ebay though which sounded a little sketch I'll admit but I haven't had any problems with it and my amp doesn't go into protection mode anymore. Mean Green alts are just crazy expensive. Another option could be the 160 amp alt from a 05 grand cherokee, you would just need to locate one with the right plug for the voltage regulator that matches your jeep or try to attach the wires is some fashion to the alt. -
Questions about my headunit and amp

Thanks for the suggestion but as I stated in the original post I want to try to use the oscilloscope at my school. My question is should I use my media player to play the tone through the aux input when testing? Even though the media player is on the quiet side. Keeping in mind that I will play all my music off of it. -

anybody? -
Hey guys, as the title says I'm looking for a single larger sub to replace my two infinity reference series 1050W's but still provide the same amount or better performance. This is to save space in the back of my cherokee without sacrificing loudness or quality. I am running a infinity 611a sub amp and I would like the sub to match up well with it, it puts out 657 watts rms at 2 ohms. Being a student funds are a little limited but I was looking at the Sundown SA-12. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Edit* The Infinity's are in a sealed box dimensions 25.5 x 10 x 12, I Would prefer the box to not come above the back seats which is about 18", I could always have the sub facing up if the depth is shorter than the height but I'm willing to make exceptions. My biggest problem is with the length of the box because I don't want to put stuff in front of the subs I have a lot of useless space. so maybe 18 x 15 x 18, my budget is about 200 but I'm willing to put down a bit more for quality

sounds good, thanks. Just need to know what I should do about setting my gain now. -
Questions about my headunit and amp

it shouldn't have a hp frequency setting for the rca outputs because it only ever gets a bass input. unless of course it were intercepting the signal for the rear speakers and then passing the signal on over to the 4 channel amp with the low frequencies already cut out. -

Gotta say I was kinda excited to see M5 post in my topic, thought I was either going to get awesome info or criticized for something I'd done. I'm just confused though heh. What do you mean by 20 is an all pass? -

yes there is a set of rca outputs so you can daisy chain amps on there they just didn't make it into the picture. I still don't see why there would be a hp frequency, the amp should let the rca signal pass through clean. It looks more like a bass boost frequency setting. When I look the amp up on crutchfield it says the DBO has an adjustable frequency of 20-80. -
Looking for a larger sub to replace my two 10's

Thanks denim, not scared to admit I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to car audio, but the knowledge I've gained over the last few days is infinitely greater than what I knew before although it is still nothing compared to most of you guys here -

I would put it into the recommended size box probably on the bigger side. -

I see, I guess I'm taking another look around at subs. Been eying the Fi Q 15" -
Sorry, I was under the impression you had the speakers. I would measure from the edge of the mounting hole with the window down to see what space you're working with.
-
Well I would have to say get in there and check it out yourself. Don't know what car you have but if the speakers mount in the door make sure the window clears them when its all the way down. It would be good to know what car you have so if other member with the same car can help you and where & how the speakers mount for those of us who don't. I installed some ADS speakers recently into the front doors of my jeep cherokee and those puckers were deep, I ended up having to make a ring of wood for the speaker to sit in so the window would clear, then the tweeters were touching the plastic grill of the door panels so I cut those out, then I put a metal grill on the door panel to keep the speakers protected and clean up the look.

Looking for a larger sub to replace my two 10's
gonzala replied to gonzala's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
I didn't mean it in a bad way. Its great now that I know I can go for a greater selection of sub woofers, its just that I thought I had started to settle on one in my budget and power range. Speaking of my budject it might go up to maybe 400 for a sub and box nothing for sure though -

oh thats great lol, things seemed simpler when I thought I needed to stick to RMS ratings. No idea what I want to do now -

How would the 15" xcon compare to the 15" Li driven by my 657 rms amp? Any rough ideas? -

gonzala replied to gonzala's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
so there's no disadvantage to having an amp with a lower RMS than the sub? I thought it might not perform as well with less power. Like if you were to compare a little import car to a Ferrari but you only had a 200 hp engine, the import wouldn't be terribly fast but it would be zippy and kinda fun but if you put that engine into the Ferrari you'd just be able to get around. But if I'm wrong, what are the disadvantages? -

Thanks for the lesson in car audio Lithium, always willing to learn when the opportunity arises. One of my goals was to have a smaller or at least shorter box than the 2 tens. I have looked at the FI subs but they seemed to require more RMS than my amp puts out, also I would LOVE to get a xcon and better amp but sadly I need to budget my money for other projects. -

So how would the IA Lethal Injection 15" in a sealed 1.5-2 cu.ft box be for what I want? which is a loud sub that still sounds good across all types of music -

gonzala replied to gonzala's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
I think so to, guess I don't grasp the definitions of SQ and SPL as well as others who have experienced them. Sorry. I guess just felt that what Lithium said about loud subs that don't sound like ass was a little to sided towards output. But now that I look at it, I do want a loud sub that will sound good across all types of music. If that is at all possible. -

gonzala replied to gonzala's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
Keeping it sealed will preserve SQ which is what I now know that I want. Would a sealed 15" fit my bill? Like the IA's 15" lethal injection is only $209 and would work with my budget well. -
Looking for a larger sub to replace my two 10's
gonzala replied to gonzala's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
Is there really no balance between the 2? Am I just on some misguided quest? But enough about that lol. I want to be able to listen to a variety of music, which I'm guessing is a SQ build. The subs I currently have sound decent across all types of music but sometimes I feel it lacks a little in the output department when I listen to bass heavy music (rap, techno). Is it too much to ask for a single larger sub that still sounds good with a little more output than I get with my two 10's? -

Sorry been fighting a sickness and ideas don't come out as clearly as I'd wish they would. so here I go again. budget is 200-250 goals: SQ but edging more to the louder side space available: 18 x 18 x 18 (smaller is better) As for subs the SA-12 was the first to catch my eye but I've also been looking at IA's lethal injection series 12" and 15"
