    Volkswagen Lupo build log

And some pics of the finished pods: Only blue because that was the only colour gloss spraypaint I had around, needed to spot them for defects in the finish. But looked good, so they were wrapped in carbonfiber vinyl to match the rest of the dash inserts: and the passenger side looks like this finished:

    Volkswagen Lupo build log

Making pods for fullrange speakers: I wanted fullrange speakers on the dash, but there is just some small tweeters there originally, so I had to modify the dash a bit Since I wanted these neodymium long-throw wideband drivers I had to come up with something: I want the 3" fullrange drivers close to where the stock tweeters are/were located in the dash, close to the corners. So I found my Bosch "dashboard muncher" and got to work: does this; They fit pretty well: considering their mounting depth/magnet assembly: Other side: Routered some speaker rings Took a few pics while making the base for the speaker mounts: Step one; ducttaping where the base is going to sit Step two: masking everywhere you are going to make a mess and spill resin: (done this before ) Cut some fiberglass fabric to form the base: Coating it with polyester resin and waiting for it to harden: This morning it was ready to be cut approx to size: Superglue and pieces of cardboard are key components for angling speakers Filled out with fiberglass putty for strength: Some more fiberglass outty: Testfitting of fullrange speaker: Angling pretty much straight up at windshield. After a good few rounds with body filler and sanding, trying out some high rise spray filler here. Starting to take shape:

    Pics of Systems Past

My first car, a 1986 Nissan Cherry With a Cerwin Vega Stroker 15 w/6inch aeroport, powered by a Kicker Impulse 1252i, and a Rockford Fosgate Punch 4080, 4x20W to power components: This was in the mid/late 90s Next car had a Soundstream Davinci amp, PG Cyclone subwoofer slotloaded in a box under the amp, and Boston Acoustics Pro 6,43 3-way components with the midbasses exchanged for Phoenix Gold qx 8" drivers: And the first system I had in the car over here, same front stage but with Soundstream Rubicon 404 and 1002 amps, and dual Polk DB10 subs: All of this is from the 90s

Almost done now, cut ports down and prettied them up a bit But maybe I should start a build log instead, and continue with the progress there

    Talking through a fan?

Get hold of a cd with sine waves from 20-100hz for instance. Go up the tracks from the bottom and try to talk while playing. At a decent output you are most likely to get this effect somewhere up the frequency range. It has more to do with material/music played than the actual system itself. Although it must put out a decent sound pressure level, but most systems with amps and subs should be able to get this to work

    10-12 ft^ for a single BTL N2 18?

Yes, I will meter it I have a brand new Termlab that I got just a few weeks ago, so I can do all my testing at home. Right now I have a really old school sub in the back, a Soundstream SPL160 from 1995. Considering that it's in a tiny sealed box (1,5ft^) and over 15 years old, it's not too bad by 1995 standards: Mind you, I have a stupidly tiny car though, back seats are gone forever, will use about every inch behind the front seats for the system: Got some oldschool class a/b amps to power it all: Hopefully the plexi is done by the end of the week, so maybe I'll get it all together in the weekend

Thank you Got a phone call from the shop that makes the engraved plexi wall yesterday, they decided to engrave with laser instread of cnc router, for a smoother and better finish. Hopefully it'll look great I got the Fi artwork in vector files from the european distributor, and I have customized them for the best effect possible when edgelit with LEDs, so fingers crossed for a good result. Because the plexi wall cost me about 7 times as much as the whole rest of the box combined

    10-12 ft^ for a single BTL N2 18?

Today the Fedex lady came around Exactly 2 months after I placed my order/paid my money. Not too bad considering its made to order, and sent to the european distributor first, then sent further on by them. Looks great! Got some Mickey Mouse vibes from seeing this arrangement Box: Ports still not cut to size and painted, but getting there:

Thanks Yes, will put a plexiglass front on it, curved for added strength. Should maybe cut a little sharper radius than I already have, we'll see And getting the Fi logo engraved in the plexi and edgelit with LED lights, for this effect: http://youtu.be/OXlx3JBFeVg

    10-12 ft^ for a single BTL N2 18?

Yes, will do! If they are about 6" shorter than now, the tuning will be to 32hz, and close to 8" clearance to the wall. Will also add a dual top plate, that will raise the ports (and add clearance) by another inch or so.

    10-12 ft^ for a single BTL N2 18?

Went for 8 cubic feet, halfway finished with the box now: Fedex tracking says sub is gonna arrive on tuesday by 6pm, so I have a couple of days to finish the box. Dual 6" aeroports (not cut down to size yet on picture!), should 5-6" clearance to wall be enough? Will end at 32hz tuning then, anything lower(longer ports) may be to close to back wall.. Right..?

    New on this forum

Hey! Quick introduction, I'm new to this forum (apart from some lurking the past year) but have been into car audio for almost 20 years, still as fun now as when I got my first car back in 93 Having placed an order for a Fi BLT N2 18" a while back, this forum has given me a lot of answers, now its time to contribute back with whatever knowledge I can pass on, and threads about my projects. My current car is a 99 VW Lupo, with a couple of nice amps installed Great forum by the way!
