Randal's GMT400 "Phantom Dually" Build
Randal Johnson replied to Randal Johnson's topic in Automotive and Performance
I agree. Those wheel and tire Combo was expensive back then. Hate to see what they would cost now. The only thing I had was not having dual wheels meant to me that they weren’t actual dualy trucks. Sick looking none the less. My plans are to start out with stock dually Steel wheeels and work from there. I’d love at set of bad ass Alcoa wheels but don’t think they will be so easy to find used and don’t really have funds for new at this time. Think I will be ahead of the game here if I can find me a set of really nice fat fenders. Might be cheaper off by buying an ole one ton truck just to get parts. There’s plenty of them around here, just got to find exactly what I’m looking for so I can sell parts I don’t need to invest in the truck I’m working with. -

Thanks Guys. Back then, I had a Black Single Cab SWB Truck. Converting it to a Phantom would not have looked good. Didn’t get White Lightning until 1997. Not sure why, but thoughts of a Phantom just never came up. She would have been sick as a Phantom. Damn I miss that truck !!! The only reason why we are not working on an Audio System at this time is we want to stay focused on the Phantom setup. This is going to have a lot of metal cutting and fabricating, lowering, and Air Ride (front and rear). Gave serious thoughts about a double diamond tilt bed setup with this. You know, old school purposes !!! -
Nice Setup.

We will get to work on the front suspension ASAP. Just set the stock wheels and bed back on until we can get back to work on the notch (after the front suspension is dropped). For now, Her ASS is closer to the ground 4 sure !!! -

Not sure those 2" shackles will be able to stay. Most likely will be replaced with stock shackles. DAMN, THOSE HUB KITS LOOK AWESOME !!! Too bad I can't permanently mount them at this time. ALOT of work to do !!! -

dual alts to seperate batteries?
Randal Johnson replied to ncc74656's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Part of a Big 3 design is a direct line from the alternator to the battery (shortest route possible). also, you can never have too many grounding points. However, they all have to be clean and secure. -

I’m an electronics technician. So reading your post assuming you know what a amp draw actually is, it’s hard for me to read your question(s) and give you a straight answer. example: an alternator makes 280 amps. -

3 Alternators to one battery ?? Why seems like a major waste of money. Nevermind. Not worth the time. -
dual alts to seperate batteries?
Randal Johnson replied to ncc74656's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
They should all be together as one. Both alternators support both batteries. At least that’s the way it should be sharing the load. If you trace the wires, all should be going to a master control point somewhere under that hood. I would verify that with a certified Ford technician before changing anything if it’s not that easy to trace out. -

Set up stock, they work as one. Which is the way they should be. Just they way they are mounted on the engine for use of space for use of the Serpentine system. -

Got the bed off so we can mount up the old 6" DJM Flip Kit. This truck already has 2" lowering shackles. Don't have time to clean the frame for the notch at this time. What can I say, It's Easter Weekend. We do not drive this truck so it will be OK to sit on the snubbers temporarily. Not sure if we're going to stay with the simple 6" drop or prepare for a monster notch ??? -

First step is to Static Drop it !!! No need to buy another lowering kit, we are going to use the old Static 4/6 DJM drop kit from my old "White Lightning" Silverado. Damn I miss this truck !!! -

This is what they called a "Phantom Dually" back in the 90's. A Static dropped (no Air Ride or Hydraulics) 1500 Series GMT400 with 3500 Series GMT400 Fat Rear Fenders & monster "Pro Street" style Rear Wheels and Tires. Please Note: Random pics found on GOOGLE. This truck has a long wheel base bed where as my truck will be a Short Wheel Base bed and actual Dually Wheels and Tires from a 3500 Series GMT400 Truck. Most I remember seeing were short wheel base trucks like mine. Should look Really Nice. -

There will be no Audio build with this truck at this time. Which is why I'm posting in this section. Maybe Later we will throw a little something in there, but for now, the Phantom is the priority build. Hope you guys enjoy our little backyard build. Thanks !!! -

Listen to your system. Learn and train your ears for a FLAT EQ. Learn left and right separation, stage and image, and most of all power, dynamics, and headroom. your system will tell you where everything thing needs to be set. Look for the Chesky Records Disc Sampler to use for your test and tune. Learn it, live it, and know what you are doing. People say that’s cool to have a loud and clear system, but they trip the fuck out when they actually hear what a real dynamic, well tuned system sounds like. Own that shit bro !!! -

I use a Zero bit track and my ears (and a small screwdriver of course) to tune my gear. Listen for the hisssssss ...... works every time. -
Everything when it comes to stage and image is dependent on application. Simply put, what’s best for the specific vehicle in question. With that being said, anything’s possible as long as you know what you are looking for when it comes to Stage and Image. For me, it’s always better to accomplish your SQ goals with less. In the same token, cone area is king with mid bass. Wish I knew your goals here cause all I’ve read from you is “loud” but you ask SQ questions. Help us out here. the easiest way to start is with a basic head unit with time alignment and a pair of temporary fab’d up 4” full range drivers attached to your A-Pilar’s. Get an actual idea on that particular vehicle’s capabilities and start asking questions based on your findings. You will learn ALOT with this very basic setup. Remember, you’re only looking for stage and image here. If you’re looking for anything else, than please disregard everything in this post. Hope this helps and happy hunting. Randal

Ok, after taking my own advice and doing some research on you, I found out that you’re a Zapco guy. Awesome, something to work with. Now after reading your post, I really don’t see where you would need help setting your gains brother. I’d like to see your setup.
