    Need some experts advice

Autonoz if you decide to go with any options these guys are suggesting im sure your son would be extremely happy. being that your son is asking for two 10's and a amp for christmas, without telling you EXACTLY what he wants he is probably how i was in highschool "only three years ago" he doesnt know much about subs, 95% of it is just to show off to his friends im guessing? At least this was me.. So i went to my "local" car audio shop and got a very mainstream name brand system that sounded ok at best and paid way to much, but at the time i was happy. you stumbled across the right place because any of the options these guys are giving you will completely blow your sons opinions and ideas out of the water. If my dad came home with a FI ssd 15 for me for christmas 3 years ago. I would have had no idea what FI was. but after listining to it, he would have been dad of the year for sure. and yes 1 15 will have the same or more output as 2 10's and if your son is anything like i was he would much rather tell his friends he has one 15 anyway. But after you figure out the sub/amp don't overlook the enclosure... it is equally if not more important... As for exactly what to do, there are many people on here that are way more knowledgeable than I so ill let them give you ideas. but i just wanted to let you know your looking for information in the right place.

    FI Q 10's or 12's?

well I think two FIQ 10's ported would be doable? and possibly the mach 5's.. as for the BL's i would lose some foot space.. but at a about .8cuft per sub (before losing any foot space)i think a few 10's would fall into that?? and yea 2 tens sealed would be very doable i think, and one 12 ported should be doable as long as mounting depth and circumference isn't an issue. M5 you seem to respond to both my posts quite a bit, and you have the same truck as me, what would you suggest doing? I know you have stated a few times that SQ is dependent on front stage mainly, but as we concluded in the other thread, with my lack of knowledge on fiber glassing, and doing custom work. the silverado is a pretty poor music environment to say the least. so what should i do? I realize im not going to get extremely good results, im just looking for the best in my situation. and with what i have to work with. My desires are a system that sounds good listening to many types of music. "is this a definition of SQ?"

    FI Q 10's or 12's?

So to start things off I have a 2000 silverado ext. cab. I am very interested in the FI Q series subs but have a quick question for those of you that are more knowledgeable than I. I would like to keep my back seat and put two subs underneath the seat, now my question is. which would be a better setup for a daily driver? I have approximately .8 cuft available for each sub. would two 12's sealed or two 10's ported be a better option? I understand that .8 cubs fits in both categories but have also heard that the 12's really need somewhere around 1.2-1.3 cuft. I listen to huge varieties of music at all different levels. and am not so much interested in hitting 145 db at one tone than having good sound and some hard hitting throughout the spectrum. My second question would be, Since i would be running somewhere around 1000 rms to each sub would the BP option be helpfull? or is that strictly for you crazy guys doing things way out of my knowledge? thanks for the help -Dean
  5. So to start things off I have a 2000 Silverado ext. Cab. And would like to get away from the Coaxials I have now and put in two sets of Components. My plans are to put both sets of drivers in each one of the doors, two tweeters in the dash, and two tweeters in the back columns. I Personally am a Fan of Pioneer Premiers line of products when it comes to speakers. and this is what im looking to do. Front 6 3/4 Pioneer Premier TS-C720PRS 50w rms 200max Back 5 1/4 Pioneer Premier TS-C520PRS 30w rms 150max For the most part I will be fading the music to the front speakers, the reason i am getting the back is for a little bit of a rear fill, and because I often have people in the back seat of my truck. Now here comes the question. I currently have a 2 channel 60w rms amp, Can I run this to my Fronts? and run my rears off the head unit (22w rms) ? does this make sense? If not what does?

    FI Q 10's or 12's?

So i was reopening this thread to try to learn a little more about my "goals" and to see if you guys can help me out a little bit. as the thread previously discussed I am looking into getting a new sub setup after i finish my current project of Sound dampening, Front speakers, and head unit. realistically probably a month from now. I started this thread with the idea that i like "Sound Quality" While after learning more and more I have found that this (might) not be true. now Id like to see if you guys can help me out a little. My current setup is two Pioneer Premier 10's sealed in about .7 box "each chamber" Im not positive on the model number but they are the ones that are 350w rms. I am running 300w rms to them from a premier amp. after having this setup for about two years now I am ready to move on. I listen to all types of music from country, rock, alternative, rap, and r&b, even a lil techno at times, I have no desire in hitting 150 db or anything like that, I just want a sub that is great at playing music. Whatever i do decide to go with it must be in less than 2.0 cuft. because the box will be going under my back seat, and even 2.0 is pushing it, i would probably be losing some foot space at that. and since it will be going under my back seat the box design will be very "non square" the box will have to rise up in the middle with the two bigger chambers on each side "so im thinking it might be better to go with two subs, one on each side rather than getting one sub that needs 2cuft of space. "because from my previous understanding you want the box to be somewhat uniform in size." correct me if im wrong. not to mention mounting depth on a larger driver might become an issue. my buddy has a FI BL 15 in his saturn running off a alpine 1000 watt amp in a 4cuft box at 32htz "ruffly" And I think it sounds amazing when listening to rap. it hits lows great, and you can really feal it. but when listening to rock i feel like its missing something, it sound good, but not quite as "tight" as i like. I almost prefer my premiers although they have extremely less output, they seem to sound better. my question is... is there somewhere inbetween?? iv heard other people say that you cant have both SQ and SPL.. but is this true?? I dont Desire a SQ system that can break SPL records. I really dont want either. I just want to turn my stereo on, Turn to some rock and have a great listening environment, then turn my stereo on the next day, turn some rap on and feel some bass. this seems very Simplistic but yet impossible at the same time.... any thoughts?? The ideas I currently have are 2 FIQ 10's ported 2 FIQ 12's sealed 1 FI BL 12 ported 2 FI BL 10's Ported 2 Mach 5 IXL 10's ported "because they require very little space" but i haven't heard much about these? should this even be a option i should consider? Im lookin to be using somewhere between 1000-2000 watts.. im tryin to keep the electrical system as low cost as possible.. trying to keep it at my Optima yellow top, big three, and im assuming a after market alternator will be necessary either way.. and obviously running two subs would be a more expensive route and generally more power would be needed. but tens would be easier to fit and since my box will be awkwardly shaped would it be better to go with two subs? it would make each chamber more "uniform" It feels like this is a somewhat long and rambling post, but any help in a direction would be greatly appreciated. I am obviously not near as experienced as all of you, and from my understanding I have different goals.. I hear you guys talk about being crazy loud at tones that arn't found in music?? or things that you wont experience in a song? like that whole blurping thing or whatever haha id like to walk by a car 30 yards away and experience something that would completely damage my hearing for the rest of my life but i dont want it in my car, haha Im just some 20 year old kid that want my buddy's to jump in my truck and say hey, that sounds pretty good. any ideas on what i should do? or what my desires are?

Your input on my component system

Thank you for the input, I think im going to try to look around at some 'higher end" components in my area if i can come across some. but as of now i think im going to go with the 720 prs being I have heard them and really liked them, they are "only" 250 and i already have a rockford amp that is putting out 60w rms at 4 ohms. anyone have experience with these? I do like to listen to music "loud" at times and being these are 50w rms speakers and i will be running 60, do they have the ability to be cranked up?? I realize everyones idea of loud is different but i think i have a pretty average view of loud. when i heard them they were "loud" and didnt distort but when i asked what they were running to them they said 100 watts. Is it normal to run twice the RMS to speakers? they sounded good to me, but it doesn't make since "to me the unknowledagable installer" to run double the suggested watts. Thanks for the input guys, i did the big three over the weekend, now im starting on some dampening which will keep me busy for awhile. and a question about that? I plan on doing layers of Dynomatt, CCF, and MLV on all door panels and behind my back seat on the back "wall" under the window. would it be worth my time to do the floor as well? that would require quite a bit more labor. would the benefits be worth the labor?

Your input on my component system

well im still kinda lost on what to do but i guess i can contemplate it for awhile while i start on the sound dampening and big three and stuff. im pretty busy with classes and work so its goin to be a drawn out process... you guys think the one set of drivers would be suffecient with the two FIq's i plan on running? it seems like you guys are all runin multiple midbass drivers. would it make sense to run a set in kicks and doors being im only doin 6.5's? or do i just need to shut up and do something and quit asking questions? Id like to thank all of you guys for your help M5, jay cee, Impious, and mj in particular... i feel like the more i learn, the more i want to keep learning. and the more i get interested in all of this.. im sure whatever i decide will probably be changed out within a year by something "new" or more advanced as i continue to learn, but id like this install to be a good "real" first install. Im sure ill be around awhile buggin you guys with some dumb questions. thanks alot.

Your input on my component system

ok you guys might be getting sick of this question by now it feels like iv asked it a few times.. but it feels like iv gotten many answers as well. which i do understand that a lot of it is personal preference, individual application, and install there has to be a "rule of thumb" or a "in general" So heres the deal i go around to a bunch of audio shops around this area to listen to speakers only to find all the generic stuff thats on everyones shelfs.. the best i found was the premiers 720prs. and i tested them out on a sound board and really liked the way they sounded "compared to Kicker, Alpine, Kenwood, RF" Although I do like the Premiers I havn't been able to test them out compared to "higher end" speakers, so my question is would the hybrid clarious speakers sound better in my application? I can pick up the premiers for 254 and the hybrids for a little over 500 Either way i am spending alot of time and money on MLV, CCF, Baffles, and such and i realize the importance of install.. but my point being Im planning on spending a couple hundred on install materials, alot on a new navigation system, alot on new subs as well as box materials and a new amp for those.. the extra 200 on speakers "comparably" isn't that much of a difference and if the hybrids would be better in my application.. I wouldn't hesitate at all on spending the extra dough do to the fact that these will be the only "highs/Mids" i will be running in my setup. The only downfall is i would be ordering these 500 dollar speakers on pure recommendation because there is nowhere around here i can listen to the hybrids.. although i do like the hybrids and just by reading up on the company i like what i hear, but i realize "liking what i hear" is what the company is obviously trying to do. So are the hybrids worth the extra dough? or are the premiers a great set of speakers for the money?

Your input on my component system

So with the install the way its set up right now. should i stick with the premiers? would it be worth the extra dough to get the hybrids? I guess i know what im going to go with. just hope im not into the whole rear fill thing as much as i think i am. or the idea of having the speakers that low...
  14. deanmpereira

Your input on my component system

so should i stick with the 720 prs? and run them off the amp i currently have at 60 rms?
  15. deanmpereira

Your input on my component system

is there anywhere you can point me on a little more information on this "enclosure" i Think i get the idea but im not sure exactly. And Im curious to see how i would like the "low stage hight" currently I have premier coaxial in my front doors and if i fade everything to the front the sound seems very low and easy to point out where the sound is "coming from" wont this have the same effect with a pair of components with the tweeters right next to the drivers? why is it such a bad idea to put the tweeters up high in the dash? it seems to me that that would help with not being able to "tell where the sound is coming from" what is the negatives?
  16. deanmpereira

Your input on my component system

with tweeters down low with the drivers and nothing up high or in the back wouldnt that make it seem empty? and make the sound very directional? and so your saying making basically an enclosure for the driver out of cutting board material and some MLV on the back? then a dampener on the seams?
  17. deanmpereira

Your input on my component system

just got your last reply sorry, so no need for the recommendations The tweeter is a little weak - i usually dont like real bright tweeters so weak tweeters is kinda normal for me. do you think they would be to weak to "not keep up with the midbass and 2 FI q's soon to come?" Considering you are putting the tweeters in your door next to the mid you should listen to them on a sound board rather off axis. - I was actually planning on putting them on the dash up against the window?
  18. deanmpereira

Your input on my component system

Could i get some ideas on how to seal up that hole in the door? im a little lost on what you mean? make an enclosure for the driver? any ideas on components since i shouldn't be spending 500 dollars? and yes I do plan on spending alot of time with the deadening and with what i explained on what my ideas are. but am i leaving anything major out?
  19. M5 and Jay cee, I dont think im as knowledgeable in car audio as you guys are giving me credit for, when your asking what are my plans? what am I willing to do? Im not sure what is necessary and what is not necessary, as M5 stated earlier I started this thread with the idea of having two sets of Components one in the front one in the back. I have learned that you guys highly disagree with this. but this as a example of what my previous knowledge was, im not sure on what i need to be looking into on install? so MJ is suggesting something that is alot easier to do.. (although after finished maybe you guys wouldn't be satisfied with the sound of the install, is it something i will be happy with? because like stated earlier this is going to be played around people that are way less knowledgeable than me. let alone you guys) Ok well Ill throw out what Im planning and you guys can let me know what im missing or need to rethink. I currently have all four door panels dynomated pretty well. (this was done on my last ill knowledge install) Iv been looking around and plan on getting Butyl rope, closed cell foam, and mass loaded vinyl Barrier from Sounddeadenershowdown from M5's sig. I also plan on cutting out 1/2 mdf baffles. My idea as of now is to obviously install the closed cell foam and mass loaded vinyl Barrier on all door panels and back wall of the truck. then cut out a mdf baffle and mount it with a piece of butyl rope to the pre existing speaker location in my door. I then will obviously mount the speaker to the MDF. (do you think having a small piece of butyl rope in between the speaker and MDF is a good idea?) I am also planning on putting a piece of Egg carton foam behind the speaker if possible (not sure if the window will get in the way when rolled down) I then will mount the tweeter On the dash up against the front window and do a little playing around to see what I like on exact tweeter placement. But as of now thats what im planning. i read that the hybrids ( which i was planning on doing?) do best with a open air baffle. So thats what im planning so far, maybe im going down a wrong road somewhere? but as for my knowledge is seems that a active system would be to much to learn, and you guys disagree with a 3 way passive system? so iv been planning on just the two way passives. and Im guessing you guys will disagree with the mids in the doors? but that would be the easiest install for me. (i understand easy and best probably dont go together but I can see that my idea of sounding good will be alot different than yours) So let me know what i need to rethink or maybe theres a option im looking over? but thats my plans as of now. like i said i was planning on doing this asap but have just been putting it off due to the fact that im realizing how little i really know.

I was looking at the pre fab kicks and they did look like they had very little structure, they look the same as the stock kicks just with a place to put the speaker. and the stock ones seem to be extremely weak, I wouldn't feel to happy mounting a pair or 6.5's to that weak plastic. Is the door really that bad of a place to mount them? being you can mount them to a sturdy baffle, and such it seems like (although not optimal positioning) that after mounting properly in the door that it would be a better placement then sticking it in those thin plastic kicks? At the OP's budget it seems he can do something more than buying some off the shelf stuff? so any ideas? I have a lot of information on what not to do... but i feel completely lost now on what to do? I as of now am looking into a lot of information on mounting the mids? baffle/dampening/ stuff like that. and i feel like the tweeters up against the windshield on the dash/A column are going to be the best for me? and I am currently interested in the Zapco competitions and the Hybrid Clarious. Am I going down the right track? or do i need to be thinking about something else?
  25. So I hear a lot of disagreements with this passive active thing? do you feel that since im not on the level you guys are on that I will be able to tell the difference? should I do more research on a active system? like i said im not really looking for a SQ competition set up you know? Im just looking for something that sounds really good to the average listener. would a pair of those hybrids fit what im looking for? like i stated earlier the idea of just a front stage is kinda new to me. and from things I have previously heard the Premier series was the best. so i realize that you guys are having some disagreements on whether to run passive or active, but is the difference going to be out of my understanding??? because the passive system seems to be alot easier to run.. and cheaper. and for the subs.. they will be underneath my seat, not behind it. The silverado is set up different then the Dodge's and fords. there's very little room behind the seats, only enough to mount the amps and stuff. and after looking into it a little more it looks like (without sacrificing foot space) I have about 2 cuft of usable space... I could bring it out a little more and lose some foot space, but it looks like the 12's ported are out of the question. Currently i have two 10's sealed in a .7 cuft box (each chamber, after displacement) but have a little more space available before losing foot space. thanks guys
