Need Help, Getting new subs to replace FI Q15.

Yeah it seems like a lot of people are using SA-8's. For the prices Sundown is charging for this line it has to be 1 of the best bang for your buck deals out there. I also like how it seems Jacob is so hands on all of his products and is always conversing with his customer base. You don't see that from a lot of manufactures. He is constantly on Facebook. I'm officially a Sundown fan. Now I have to figure out how to get the money together for one his amps.

I got my Sundown SA-12D2 a couple of days ago. Unfornately I was too illl to installl it. Out of the box I was totally impressed with this driver considering how much it cost. The motor is too big to be rated at 600 rms. Anyway I swapped out my RE Audio SXX and dropped the SA in. The enclosure is 2^3 tuned at 32 hz. I found what I was looking for as far as sound quality. This driver has more of a musical quality to it than the SXX. It seemed like the SXX just wanted murder lows. This sub gives me the best of both worlds. It can kill the lows and still give you good quality lower mid bass. I'm running it on a RF Power T500-1bd that came rated at 762 watts @ 1 ohm. When I get better I'm purchasing 2 of the 15's for my Explorer. I wanna thank every one that post helpful information on this forum also.

Sorry, wifey and the kids are out bumping it right now. When they get back I'll get some picks.

My SXX played the lowes better than the SA but the SA just to me sounds better overall. Especially for the price. I just wanted a 1 subwoofer system for my Altima. Plus I wanted a sub that I could use in a ported or sealed box depended on my mood. SXX is strictley ported. Plus the SA is just plain loud compared the SXX.

The FI Q 15 will be the cheaper of the two even if you get every option it will be cheaper, and hold a lot more power than the Havoc.

A friend of mine is using a Clarion crossover I think the model # is MCD-360. He is using it because his headunit only had 1 set of preouts. He is running a set of tweeters,4x6, and 6x9's off of a 2 channel 300 watt RF Punch amp, and Brutus 1610D to a 12 inch Q sealed. I heard a huge difference in his highs and the bass response.

The slopes are 24db's on the RF Power amps, but he doesnt need to run the amp, and hu crossover though right. He should just use the crossover on the amp since the slope is already 24 db, and he can turn his gain back up too right to maybe 3/4 of the way. My Kenwood has 4v preouts and I have my gain just up above 1/4 of the way and my sub volume on +9 out of -15 to +15. I know JL slash amps have balanced differential inputs I rarely had to turn the gain up on it to get good output and it sounded alot louder than 500 watts. I miss that amp. bakedboy I'm glad you started to figure it out, now you can let that sub tear your car apart.
-
Most headunits now have built subwoofer level you should have that turned all the way and you should have the gain on the amp turned wide open.

I dont mean to chime in but JL slash amps have balanced differential inputs so you dont need to turn the gain high on them whether you have 2v preouts or 4,5 volt preouts. These guys are right and they are very knowledgle. What voltage preouts do you have on your headunit and do you have the sub out on your headunit turned up all the way? Also you really need to take the peoples advice and check your wiring on the sub and the wiring to the amp. I did the same thing and wired wrong and fried a coil on my sub. BL's are really good subs, and I'm sure FI would not send you a defective sub. If the situation continues you need to contact them.

yeah Crunkjuice that looks llike the same design. I see what your saying. I dont have the tools to build an enclosure. You by any chance know if Lowes or Home Depot does custom cuts of mdf?

Hey fellas quick question, I was talking to co-worker and he was telling me about Obcon subwoofer enclosures. So I looked them up. They are using a concept called labyrinth porting. I ordered a Sundown SA-12D2 a few days ago and the recommended eclosure size is 1.75^3 tuned to 30 hz. The box I'm looking at is 1.8^3 tuned to 38 hz. Has any used these enclosures or heard some one that was using them. If so just wondering what your opinions or impressions of them are. Your opinions are valuable to me because of everyone's knowledge on this forum. Thanks ahead of time for any opinions. Also if I decide to go sealed would it be ok to run a slighly larger than recommended sealed enclosure say 1.25^3 after sub displacement would the sub play a little deeper due to it being in a larger enclosure?
-
Thanks for your response. I'm sure you read my other posts that I'm dealing with cancer right now. So I'm a little weak right now. I see you do custom enclosures. I like the 1.75 idea. I'm just concerned tuning to 30 hz.I was thinking maybe 33 hz. The box I have now is 29x14x14. If I can width of the box down by say 8-10 inches and adjust the depth accordingly I can gain the airflow to the cabin. Right now I get very little airflow due to box completely blocking off the trunk. Out of curiosity due you know if Lowes or Home Depot does different size custom cuts of mdf. If so could you advise my of any programs that I could use to design an enclosure.

I was referring to Phi's comment about a vented box tuned to 38 hz losing output or not even being able to play tones down to 25hz. And i mentioned would I get better output and low frequency extension using a 1.4^3 enclosure stuffed with a 1 1/2 of polyfill. I kinda wanna stay away from a box tuned low. I have a 2^3 box tuned to 32hz problem is the box goes all the way across the back seats so when I fold my seats down I dont get much air flow into the cabin. And unfornately i dont have the health right now to take on the project of builiding my own box. I hope that clears it. Thanks for the response.

I have a 02 Nissan Altima I'm using a RF Power T500-1BD it is rated @ 762 ohms with no upgraded electrical. The car has a 110 amp alt. I'm usually getting between 13.5-13.8 volts. I may upgrade the battery anyway. Are you referring to using a vented enclosure tuned at 38hz. Wouldnt the driver be able to play down to say 25 hz in a sealed enclosure depending on the frequency response of the driver. I figured a box tuned at 38 hz would still play the lower frequencies just not with a lot of outout. I dont know have you heard a driver played in a box tuned that high and what was your impression? Thanks for your time again.

1st Phii thanks for your reply I was trying to stay away from 2^3 tuned at 32 hz now and I can't get a lot of airflow to the front of the cabin with the back seat down because the opening is pretting covered up. But your suggestion has given me and idea. I'll try the 1.4^3 and stuff some polyfill in it. So you think 38 hz is too high for that driver or will it not play anything down to say 25 hz with decent output. I'm trying to learn as much as I can. Coming to SSA you find out how little you truly know and how much more there is left to learn. So would I get a lot of air flow to the cabin using the sealed enclosure because of the displaced air by the driver. And also is it true that it is easier for the driver to reach it's xmax in a sealed enclosure vs a vented enclosure?

Unfornately I'm dealing with colon cancer right now. That was 1 of my goals for 2011 was to learn how to build my own enclosures because of these audioshops around here want anywhere from $200 to $350 to build an enclosure. There's a trade off for living in Delaware lower property taxes, no sales tax, but one the highest cancer rates in the country. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I'm looking for low extension. That's why I was considering the sealed enclosure I mention. Sundown recommends 1^3 FS of 44hz. Would an enclosure slightly larger than say 1.5^3 give me a little more low end extension and ouput. I was figuring maybe part of the same principle would apply as a vented enclosure bigger enclosure equals more output.

I'm not even considering a GZ enclosures I found 1 of the smaller enclosure enclosures on Ebay brand new for $50 with free shipping. It was the 1.8^3 at 38 hz.
-
They look like well built boxes. I think my friend was referrring to the GZ models which are too expensive and too big for my truck. I like the idea of the 1.8^3 enclusure because it will be easier to get mor air flow to the front of my vehicle with the back seat down.

Amp suggestions?
semrod replied to tereinke89's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
I just bought a brand new RF Power T500-1BD on Ebay for $260 with the Punch Eq remote. My amp came rated at 762 watts at 1 ohm, 494 watts at 2 ohms, and 289 at 4 ohms. You can get the dual 4 ohm DCON's and run them at 1 ohm or you can get an Audioque AQ1200D for $260 brand new it will give you 510 watts @ 4 ohms, 870@ 2 ohms, and 1200 watts @ 1 ohm. You can ran the dual 4 subs at 4 ohms and if you decide you want more power you already have it. It will save you money in the long run if you ever want higher power handling subs and AQ makes good products. -

I'm a newbie if you don't mind my suggestion. But the Kenwood Excelon series have all those features and then some. You can get the KDC-X794. It has front and rear usb, 5 band eq, high and low pass filters with adjustable slopes, bluetooth, 4v preouts, also headunit let's adjust the speaker distances from your listening position. Alot features that Alpine charges alot more for. Crutchfield has it for $220 with free shipping. You may find it cheaper on Ebay. I have the 994 and I love. I came close to buying a Alpine CDA-117 but it was $350 and they wanted another $100 for bluetooth. I hope I was some help in your decision. -
I ordered my Sundown SA-12D2 today. Can't wait for it to come and I hooked up my RF Power T500-1BD today huge difference didnt even have to turn the gain up or the bass boost and I had a good knock going. I had to turn the sub volume and the bass on my headunit all the way down. There's no way that Hifonics amp was putting out any where near 1500 watts not even 1000 watts. So I'm selling it for sure. I'm done with Hifonics there not efficient at all. You have to throw a ton of power at them so they can get closer to their advertised wattage. I may get another RF Power amp like the 1000 watt version or an AQ or Sundown for my Explorer.
