A plate amp is what the amp is called in a powered home theater/audio sub. It is a self contained amp that all you do is cut a hole in the box, put it in, screw it down, and plug it in. Referred to as a plate amp because it is mounted to a plate.

Maybe its my wierd sense of humor, but I find these to be some of the most hillarious stories I have ever read. http://tuckermax.com/

Anything with frequency based math/measurements will help. My whole life is spent in Fast Fourier Transform and Frequency analysis land. Cool stuff though. I'll look into that this week. I'm heading to bed, thanks for the info!

Theres a couple electroacoustics classes here in the EE dept., but no acoustis/physics related classes, I've already checked into that.

Cool stuff, what kind of degree/specialization stuff does one need to look into that area?

Once it reaches about 3-4am I'm pretty well done for the night.

Thanks Sean! Currently there is a shortage of NVH engineers that actually understand frequency analysis. Not a bad route considering your interests. Whats NVH stand for? *edit* Noise Vibrations and Harmonics???

Some guys on my floor have gone to IhoP at 3am before... The nearest Ihop is an hour away though though... they didn't get back till like 5am.

They were probably searching the web for pancakes. Mmmm pancakes. I'm hungry.

More of a far off fantasy. Quite franky I don't want to do engineering, but I can't figure out anything else to do. Pretty much all I Really enjoy doing is working in a wood shop, I have no problem working long hours doing tedoius stuff in a wood shop, its one of the few things I actually enjoy. If there was such a thing as a major in woodworking, I'd be working on a fricking PhD You'd be surprised at how much engineering can be similar, albeit probably with a different substance instead of wood. Making something that doesn't exists requires modelling and design of the model which of course is all driven by a conversation between engineering and marketing. One off manufacturing can be a blast. I actually spend a large portion of my time measuring one off pieces to see how they compare with cpu aided models. Hmmm.

I just enjoy building stuff though... If there was a job that I could go and work for a place like B & W and just build their sample/prototype enclosures and stuff I'd ask who I had to kill to get the job.

*Wondering how stupidly insane a good 3-way setup with an 18/8/horn would be...*

What could be more fun than High Efficency and high power???

I found some plans on DIYaudio for some 12" Pro audio TL enclosures (I'm pretty sure they were 12") awhile ago that I've got bookmarked on the computer at home that I've been thinking of making. They were designed for getting loud as hell and still sounding good if I remember right... Thought that would be a fun project with 1kw on tap per side.
