    Welcome to the IHoP v.2

I understand that isn't a choke hold, a choke hold uses the elbow to compress the entire neck. NYPD policy is to first use submission/grapple hold, not taser, baton, oc spray, etc. What he did was taught by and correct by nypd rules/policy. Just what I've read about it.

Depends on which 3.1 is in it. Most of them are really fairly simple. I can't remember the VIN code on the motor that is a PITA (there are 3 3.1 VIN codes, one is a CA, another Fed, and a 3rd that uses a different front mount). If the front motor mount bracket is part of the cover it is a real fucking hassle, but other than a snug fit there isn't a huge amount of difference. Some of the older ones had an annoying horseshoe mount bracket that block the cover and it can be a bit of a bitch to get the bolts out of the side of the block, but I assume yours is newer than that... I am thinking that bracket was superseded around 95. In any case, I have seen that more than once. Sometimes the bolts that run into the water jacket get covered in a sludge that makes them had to get out. Even of they come out OK, I suggest taking a larger flat screw driver and reaming out the holes, as it will make it easier to get everything back together and aligned correctly. If the car has some miles on it, I might think about getting the speedy sleeve timing cover kit from Fel-Pro. It will have a sleeve that you press onto the balancer surface that rides on the front crank seal. You will need a balancer puller set, but I assume you have one. This balancer is pressed on and will not come off without one. When you go back together you will want a good sealer for the front rail on the oil pan. It is IMPERATIVE that this seal be effective, as you must remove the engine to do a pan gasket on this engine. There are main bearing cap bolts that go through the sides of the oil pan and into the block. You cannot remove the ones that are sandwiched between the tranny and engine without separating the 2. Cut the old gasket out, flush with the front of the block. Use a brand new razor, and do not disturb the seal between the pan and the block right behind the front cover lands. I like to use "Right Stuff" sealer you get from NAPA. You must ensure that the pan and cover mating surfaces are clean and dry... no oil, no water, no coolant... Use as much brake cleaner as possible and make sure it dries to a dull finish. Lay a decent bead on the surface of the pan, and also lay a decent bead on the front cover where it rests on the pan. Do your best to bring the cover in as far as possible and press down into the surface of the oil pan, so as not to push the silicone out. If you have over 150K I might consider a new timing chain. Oh yeah, be sure you unplug the cam sensor on the top of the cover before you pull it. Don't want to fuck that up either . I would set aside about 6-8 hours, if you are proficient. While not a hard job, it can be time consuming. Awesome, I've got 93k on the car so I'll leave the timing chain alone. Part of me says replace it while in there, but I don't want to spend more money on the POS car that I am selling next year. Thanks Seth!

Seth, I got a call from the wife today saying her car overheated. 3.1L Lumina, looks like it is leaking from the back of the timing chain cover, how big of a PITA is removing the timing chain cover and replacing gaskets. Also, anything else that I need to look for/replace while I'm in there. I've already done the lower intake manifold gasket on it.

Your insurance agent is the only one who can answer that question though, give him a call, they aren't going to bite.

It all depends on the nature of the loaning of the vehicle. If its a truck for the random hey, can I use your truck to pick up a new refrigerator then they'll probably cover it if he wrecks it. If it is a normal occurrence, they'll say nope.

Discussion at work today about a car battery jump box. Guy got a new one, wants to test it by unhooking the positive terminal, hooking up the boost box to the cable seeing if the car will start. Another guy chimes in and says if you do that it either won't start or blow up the ECM/electronics since all modern vehicles have to have the battery to smooth out the alternator output... Car in question is a ~'00 Buick Centry with a 3.8L. So what say you people who actually work on modern vehicles, not old and busted ones like me. I don't think there is a problem with using the boost box in place of the battery as a test but what the hell do I know.

Me.We need to figure that out!I spent a while reading what it takes to get into distilling..... Not simple, but a small investment could turn into a ton of $$$ in 4 years. If you screw up the paperwork on distilling you go to jail. If you screw it up on beer making, they say you did it wrong and help you fix it from what I've been told.

Actually it is extremely common. What do you do, dude? I know you have mentioned it, it just escapes me. I facilitate research at a university by building/designing what is needed. I have a weld/machine/fab /woodshop

Already did the intake gasket, total pita. Plugs need replaced, haven't got there yet. Coolant bleed was a pita, maybe it needs done again for done reason.

So mechanics. 99 Lumina 3.1l, auto, 93k miles. Recently the temp has been fluctuating while driving quite a bit, it use not do that. I'm down at the in laws but the weather is going to be nice so I can work on it. It doesn't seem to be like a thermostat issue since they fail open, haven't worked on anything, water pump was replaced 10k miles ago, fuse is good for the fans, coolant is 2 years old.

They make some good aluminum. Fatigue life becomes something you have to care about, but when its engineered properly it doesn't matter for this kind of application.

    Welcome to the IHoP v.2

I bought some items from a company the other week, 3x packs of 6 of one thing, 1x pack of 6 of another. The 3x packs of 6 were at some ridiculous price, I called them and they said no problem, we will honor it, go ahead and order. So I order, haven't seen my crap in a week, give them a call, and they say 'Oh yea, we are out of that, can we ship you the next comparable item?', and they claim they will honor their price so I said 'Sure.' A week later I get my crap, THREE of the first item, not my packs of 6, and the pack of 6 of the second item, they had refunded me for one pack of six on the original, then they just billed me for an additional 16$. What the hell? This company is a lighting place out of Minnetonka, WTF, I thought ya'll were better up there?
