.338 Lapua is expensive. Reloading it I think is above 1$ per round. What kind of ranges are you looking to realistically shoot at?
-
Yes, a larger projectile will have more mass, but velocity in the energy equation is squared, hence carries more for the overall energy of a projectile.
-
Can you elaborate. I thought when you mentioned bullet selection you were referancing the projectile itself? I could be wrong, but in general I have understood that a larger diameter round generally had more mass. More mass would result in more momentum at any matched velocity. The flaw is thinking that all rounds of the same caliber would be the same, and that the powder would be the same. Obviously Case makes a difference also. The 6.5 is a fast as all hell round. Especially compaired to the .338 lapua In order for the round to be as effective as possible it needs to expel all of its energy inside of the target. Something like a FMJ isn't going to do very well at this, it will run through both sides and keep on going, now if you knock out the shoulders it will do just fine. Also with the rounds you don't want something to nuke upon impact of the outside of the shoulder and not cause any real internal damage. In reality, a .243 with something like a 120gr Barnes TSX will take most of the common game in the country if you know how to shoot.

I'm positive you know more than me. It just goes against everything I have been told.* and I never bothered to research further. Yep, pure gun lore that is pure BS.
-
Exactly. I also would like another actuall gun. I don't own ANYTHING bolt action so... I thought it would be the way to go for something. I would rather pay to get a 30 round .308 mag anyway! Too bad you can't get a drum..... To me it's a "bit" silly taking an assault rifle more serious than what it is. It's made to be decently accurate but moreso to put higher powa lead downrange and still be portable. I'm really really hesitant to go ANYTHING less than 7mm. If I ever want to use it as hunting, the bigger the round the better. Bullet selection > caliber choice.
-
Yes, It probably is. However it would be a load of fun, and I want a revolver. I can then just load it and forget it. Right now I rotate my 1911 mags every month and only keep 3 in the clip. I could have 5+ in a revolver and not even think twice. Why on earth do you rotate mags and keep only 3 in them? Long term compression will NOT hurt a spring, its simply not a factor. They have found 1911 mags that have been loaded since WWII and still function just fine.

Few thoughts on the .338 Lapua though. Kyle Defoor: Prairie Gun Works Timberwolf .338 Lapua

If you really want to run your AR long range, rebarrel it to 6.5 Creedmoor. The MOA game is kinda pointless, not many people have the ability to shoot 1/2-1/3moa past oh, 50ft. I know someone who built a AR in 6.5 Creedmoor, worked up a load for it, then sold it because it is flat out easier to shoot a bolt gun at long range than a gas gun due to the recoil impulse and the reaction of the rifle.

I have... I want to be a bit unique though. Something with a tugboat of energy. My AR10 is great with the .308(7.62) But I want something accurate and bolt action so I can feel all snipery. Also I can't find cost effective 4 round clips for hunting for the AR10, thus I couldn't hunt with it if I wanted to. SooooOOOooOoOo of course I "need" another gun. The roomate has a 7mm Mag and that means I need something bigger, of course. I have recently considered the .338 lapua as it can produce > 2 times the energy. Another option is to buy a few other complete uppers for my AR10 with long barrels, but again I would bet that most any quality bolt action could still out MOA the best auto. Simple, cut down a Magpul LR20 mag, or contact MidwestPX.com He has cut them down before, pin them to 10rd for California, etc, etc. Energy isn't everything, still need ability to buck the wind, and then have to know how to run it, have the optics to run that far out, etc.

If you're aiming properly it is Sure, could it kill a guy? Yes. Is it a worthless gun for self defense and only good for snakes? Yes. The standard amount of penetration is 11" or greater for a defensive gun.
-
Lever action? Ewe. I'm open to anything though. Other than feeling like a cowboy why do you like it? Also I was thinking to get the 44 mag as a nighstand revolver not rifle. I've been thinking the .383 lapua as a great option for a rifle instead of the .50 bmg though. It will fire WAY more rounds without problems, and it's a bit cheeper. Won't derail a train though..... If you want a long range rifle, I think i would be looking heavily at 7mm stuff.

BJ is outside of Wichita, KS if I remember correctly.

In 2 years I should have plenty of ammo and guns to at least bag myself a couple of zombie nazi's. If we have to go down with Zombies, I'm taking the Nazi bastards with me.

I need to find another MTS class to attend, I'm not sure they have any more that would be applicable to me though.

Ship? Fuck that. Drive it! x2. It's always fun to drive a newly bought car across the continent I had trouble finding the gear shifter when first driving the jeep road trips are the best or he could fly me out there and I'll drive it east for him He flies us both out and we take turns driving?

Two ex-Instron Application Engineers work for us. What sort of duty cycle and force? A small duty cycle. A couple of labs a day if that. Looking for a 5,000lb minimum, probably in the 10,000lb range. We are looking to replace a couple of older SATEC T5000 benchtop units.

The Instron sales man just left here. Getting some quotes on a couple of new electromechanical load frames for a teaching lab.

I would never buy a car from someone that didn't know shit about it mechanically. Unless they had factory service records for it.
