wafsman posted a topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
will i need to run a relay between my starting battery and a kinetik 600 in the trunk? if so, what size would be needed? -

relay needed for kinetik 600?

sorry, i guess it would be a battery isolator i need. all wire is 0 ga and will be working with less than 1000 rms total. always listen to music with car running. -
So I just got me a new ride, 99 Dodge Dakota extended cab, which means designing a new system and a little insight from the wonderful minds at the SSA forums. As stated, ride is a 99 Dodge Dakota extended cab with rear seats removed. Completely stock at the moment. Planned electrical would be Big 3 upgrade with 0 ga, stock battery up front and a Kinetik 2400 in the back. Wasn't planning on upgrading the alt at this point, but I realize it may be a necessary upgrade in the future. Already decided on equipment would be an Alpine digital media receiver and some Second Skin sound deadening, yeah not much but a start. I listen to hard rock, metal and some rap. Budget would be 2500 for everything, which puts me at about 1600-1700 for speakers and amps, may be able to go slightly higher if needed, but I'm trying to avoid that. Also looking to go used wherever possible. System goals would be to achieve bone-rattling bass, chest-thumping mids and clean-crisp highs. This truck wil be an everyday truck that wil be listened to everyday. I plan to do some fiberglass work in this project, including the door panels to fit two 6.5's in each panel and the A-pillars to fit two tweeters, or maybe a tweeter and a small midrange. Now the ideas I have running around my brain. For mids and highs, I was thinking two pairs of Alpine Type-R 6.5" components running on an amp pushing 100-150 rms on four channels. For lows, I was thinking of four Alpine Type-R 12's sealed or two FI Audio BL 15's ported, running on 2000-2500 rms. Sub amp setups I have been looking into are two JL 1000/1's, Kicker 2500, Sundown 2500, two Alpine pdx1000's, there seem to be quite a few options here, opinions welcome. Trying to decide on sub setup also, I am a big fan of the Alpine and FI, I've always heard that what matters when it comes to output, its how much air you're pushing and my brain tells me that four 12's are gonna push more air than two 15's, but I have heard a lot about FI subs sounding like they have more than what's actually there, I.e. running a single 10 that is louder than two 12's or whatever, any insight here would also be greatly appreciated.

i have a 2002 dodge dakota extended cab and im running 2 15's ported, box is under the rear window line. its 2 AQ sdc2.5 15's and it gets loud, but im gonna wall it and do 4 sa-12's. i think i could get roughly 8 cubes under the window like and like 12-13 walled off. just letting you know that you have the room to do it. also this is with the box being only 15 inches deep due to the fact that my amps are infront of the box on a false floor. Thanks for the info, what are the dimensions of your box?
-
Custom box is definitely in the works. Although I have been thinking about size restrictions and I don't think I will be able to fit the proper enclosure for the two BL15's in a ported enclosure, so I have been pondering a few new ideas and I could use your input. Been thinking about either running either four SA-8's on two Sundown 1000D's in a ported enclosure or running two ICON 15's on two Sundown 1000D's in a sealed enclosure. What do you guys think? As for front stage I have been looking into CDT as a better alternative, thinking about running the CL-41/25 Pro 4" Components up in the a-pillars and the CL-69 Mid-Subwoofer in the front doors all running on a Sundown 100.4. As always, feedback is greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback, its greatly appreciated. So general consensus seems to be two BL15's will be better, sounds good. As far as amps go I would love to go with the two JL's (which I've seen on here for 400-450 used, so at the top end, but still within my budget), but it seems that most on here say money would be better spent running Sundown. I'm obviously biased towards what I've personally heard, which is mostly JL and Kicker, but its hard to argue that I've yet to hear bad things about Sundown. For components, once again I'm onlyl hearing good things about this Bravox stuff, but can one set of components really keep up with two BL15's on a Sundown 3000? Thanks again for all your help and input.

Need Help Choosing An Amp For My Speakers
wafsman replied to wafsman's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
the planet audio's don't sound bad, but there is parts of songs that completely mute out and i am looking for more output cause some songs the bass overpowers the mids and highs. the speakers are hooked up to an american pro vs-1407. placement is in the front doors and rear deck, but plan is to run front stage only, leave holes open in rear deck and possibly running a custom 3-way setup up front. -
Need Help Choosing An Amp For My Speakers

ok some info. Car is a 99 grand prix gtp. Electrical planned is big 3, 220 amp alternator (220 max, 110 idle), kinetic 2400 in the back. Sub stage is 4 fi ssd's on a sundown 3000d. Goals for sysem are to at least be able to hear the whole frequency range, whereas my one now has parts of the song that sound like its muting. Right now I'm running 2 pairs of planet audio torq 6.5's. They sound good, but I want those frequencies I'm missing out on while stil having good output. Budget is 400 for the speakers and an amp. Musical taste is metal and hard rock with some juggalo music. -

are they really that bad? How will a speaker that is that much smaller give me better sound? -

My budget would be 400 for the mids/highs and the amp to power them. I have not purchased them yet. -
so i have decided to go with fi subs and audique amps for my next setup. it will be going in a 99 grand prix gtp. budget is 1500 for the bass setup. it will be playing mostly hard rock and metal, with a little rap on the side. goals for this system are mostly output, i obviously don't want it to sound like complete crap, but the main goal is output. also this is my daily driver, no comps for me. so after a little background info on what i'm looking for, back to the root question... which setup would have more output? option 1: 4 fi ssd 12's running on an audioque 3500 option 2: 2 fi btl 12's running on 2 audioque 2200 plan was to go ported to 33 hz on either option. option 1 would be with 1.8 cu ft per sub option 2 with 2.5 cu ft per sub.
-
thanks for the input, i'm pretty certain that i have decided on a pair of 12" btl's, but i also have a couple more questions though. what does infamous "saddle-shaped" (compliance) response mean? also would it be advisable to run a box that is that much bigger and tuned that much lower (i.e. 7 cu ft and 28 hz) than recommended specs according to the website, or are would the sites specs work better (i.e. 5 cu ft and 32 hz)?
-
ok i have read up on ///M5's links and hopefully the following information will help you all steer me in the right direction, since i'm still just as confused as when i started. most all previous setups i have owned have been multi-sub setups. i started with a pair of 12" American Bass VFL's (12 years old according to Bob from American Bass) on a JL 250/1, this is also the setup i am running currently. in between all that i ran a 10" Eclipse on an Orion T300 in addition to the American Bass. also tried a pair of 12" JL W3's on a RF Punch 800.2 in addition to the American Bass. two 12's are not loud enough, but sound decent. two 12's and a 10 wasn't much different, couldn't even really tell the 10 was in there. and four 12's was obviously louder, but still not as loud as i'm looking for and it sounded pretty sloppy. i've only owned sealed boxes. my budget for the whole system, which i am starting from scratch this time, is 2500. also i am planning to purchase some stuff used, like maybe the subs and amps. vehicle is a 99 pontiac grand prix gtp. other products i have heard but not owned, a 99 cougar with a pair of 12" JL W3's and a pair of 10" Kicker CVR's (both sealed) all on a Kicker KX1200.1, had the closest to the output i think i am looking for, same car current setup is a pair of 12" Diamond D6's (ported) on an 1800 watt Visonik, which sounds really good, but still isn't loud enough. an old minivan with two pairs of 12" Audiobahns (sealed) on two 760 watt Pioneers, which was quite loud, but sounded like crap. all the other systems i have heard haven't been anywhere close to the output i'm looking for, people running some small MTX amps and Sony Xplod subs. musical preferences would be mostly hard rock and metal, i.e. slipknot, mudvayne, three days grace, old korn, rob zombie/white zombie, metallica, disturbed, pantera, marilyn manson, but also juggalo music (not rap music), i.e. insane clown posse, twiztid, boondox, blaze. my system goals is to be able to hear the full range of music, whereas my system now has parts of songs that like it's being put on mute. and that bone-rattling, eyeball-shaking, take-your-breath-away bass. i am by no means going for an sq setup, i would just like to actually hear all the music that is playing, but at the same token, i am not going for spl setup, as this will never be used in a competition or for burping. as far as research i have done, i could stare at specs for speakers all day and i still can't figure out what specs i need to get what i'm looking for. i have been on numerous forums (although this is the only i use now) asking questions and searching threads, but unfortunately my ideas usually just seem to spark argument, as you can read earlier in this thread, which i somewhat follow what they are going back and forth about, but in the end i am just as confused as when i started. i have friends that tell me things you guys say are retarded and vice versa. there is just so much info out there it's hard to figure out what's what.
-
so i have decided on getting the sundown 2500 to run a pair of fi q15's and i had some questions about the electrical needed to support this. i was looking at getting a delco alternator that puts out 220 amps max and 110 amps idle, stock is a 110 max, a kinetik 2400 in the back and 0 ga wire for power, ground and big 3. you guys think this will be sufficient? also would a 250 amp fuse be ok, or should i go with a 300 amp fuse?
-
i thought my goals were pretty clear, what else would you need to know to steer me in the best direction? i do like the btl's, i have been looking into getting the subs and amps used so i might be able to get some higher end stuff while still staying under my budget.
-
thanks for the feedback everyone. battery under the hood is stock.
-
yeah i think i'm going down a much better route now. i believe my money will be much better spent on running two Q15's on a sundown 2500. this i think will get me good output while still maintaining a decent musical quality, also it would open up for some play room on the other end of my budget allowing me to get an alternator and a battery instead of having to choose between them. and leaving me plenty of headroom for install materials and any unforseen install issues. thanks again for all your help guys.
-
yeah i had 4 12's in my altima, it didn't go easy, but it did end up fitting. yeah know i've just been back and forth so many times on everything out there, too many choices i just want to try and spend my money in the right places the first time. after trying to price things up i may have to cut my budget back to 1000 for sub and sub amp to allow for some other needed upgrades.
-
thanks for your input. i was thinking the same, but i wanted to check with the experts first. and yeah, room won't be an issue as long as i stay on the smaller side of the recommended size for ported enclosure, giving 1.8 cu ft for each sub.
