Alt, Batt, Wiring for 4kw+ in Alero
RE XXXv3 replied to RE XXXv3's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
The difference between 2k and 4k should be around 3db right? If 1 battery can sustain 2k that's fine, but would 2 subs that are 1000 RMS be louder? I wouldn't mind using 2k if the subs will last longer, 2 12's and 2k is more than what I had, as long as I'm louder than a 12/1500w. What about using an amp at .5 or .25ohm, does that still need the battery power or is it the amp that's pushed harder? -

Approx. how much can 1 battery sustain? -
Blew a tinsel and I want 2 12's, can't find an 05 XXX, I bought it for that reason.

I had an 05 RE XXX 12D2 in 2.2 cubes @ 35 or 37hz on 1500W and it sounded great and pounded in my Sunfire. I swapped it for an Atomic APX 12D2 and although everything is box determinant I didn't like the sound of the cone, it's like it didn't matter what box it was in, it wasn't near SQ, how does the new BTL sound compared to these? I only have those subs to compare. The XXX sounded neutral & deep and the APX sounded like "cardboard". Does the cone sound smooth like it's designed to play a low octave? I didn't like going from XBL^2 to an SPL sub. Is the BTL somewhere in between or very similiar to an APX? Is anyone in the Hamilton, Ontario area willing to demo? See any problems with this? It says total port length is 29" but the box is only 26" deep, shouldn't it be 27" and 28" with a double front baffle? RE box calculator 37 width 17 height 26/26 depth 1" MDF 6"/0" port 5.771 @ 33.77/2.7055 each 90 sq.in. Thanks.

Gotta buy everything, an amp that'll push 2 BTL 12's. I'm trying to save weight. Can I get a bigger alt and use 1 batt or a smaller alt and 3 bats or will the alt not power enough or not have anywhere to put that power? -
I was like what the hell is a lanyard and a Jordan? LOL ... I'd buy a shirt & hat.

I have an 01 Alero 4 door and I'm looking for the resonant frequency. I'm putting a foreward fire box in that's 17 x 37, 2 btl 12's on 4k.

That looks very loud! Nice screens! Go for 2 18's .

It was stolen a few years ago it was the last one I had, it was decent except the fronts were stock, I wasn't finished. The cops found it burning a mile away, and the person(s) also smashed into some cars in a nearby town. Sunfire GT Stock fronts, 4x6 I think. Panasonic 7" flipout touchscreen $1000 used 2005 RE XXX 12D2 $350 It wasn't stolen, the APX was thank god, I paid $200 for it, the Eclipse was $200. 2.2 cubes @ 35 or 37hz 1" MDF 2 or 2.5" slot port $300 Visonik V900XD 1500W @ 1ohm $250 The XXX blew a tinsel so I swapped it for an Atomic APX 12, the amp blew up in my car when I hooked it back up after lending it, I might have put the wires in wrong but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't do that, sparks flew and it started smoking like there was someone spraying the inside with a fire extinguisher, and I had to kick out the wires, the amp was very hot, it started smoking right after I turned on the deck. I'd like to know if I F'd that up. XXX blew a tinsel so I bought an Atomic APX 12 and swapped it. It sounded horrible and wasn't as loud although the VC was very stiff. I swapped the APX for an Eclipse SW8200 and left the port open and ran the amp at 2 ohms (750W), the XXX and SW are pretty much SQ subs, the XXX sounds neutral while the SW sounds neutral and warm, that's about it, they had nearly the same SPL to my ears, the XXX tickling your nose and blurring your vision 35-45hz. 2 runs of 1.0 (batt to amp & amp to ground) It probably did a solid 138-142 @ 45hz, if the windows were rolled down with car off, if I went into my house 40 feet away it would vibrate the walls a bit, if the windows were up it just rattled. It impressed everyone, my rearview fell off twice, but I wanted another sub & 1500W firing foreward and fronts, it would have been crazy and I wouldn't of had it cranked all the time, my ear started crackling but it was probably the fronts they sounded scratchy. I also tried 2 Eclipse SW8200's sharing 750W and it had intense lows I loved those subs.

Hopefully. What's weird? COD2 is going to be great. -

Maybe your amp or hearing is crappy. 2 sealed 12's in a really large space could be the problem but I've heard 2 ported 10's in a Jimmy on maybe 2000 watts and I couldn't breathe.
-
Could you cut it out and build the box into the console and have it hidden? F150
-
A 10 with less than 1000" in a sealed box isn't much output. Get a 1500W sub and port it.

How is air supposed to travel into the box when air is being pushed another way right beside it? It seems like that port is being left out.

A general question about bass and how it works
RE XXXv3 replied to Ndnkobra's topic in General Audio
Since the trunk lid is moving the wave that hits it is going to jump around and change it's sound too, that's why in the extreme class they use cement. Deadening helps a lot not only with rattle but you might see a +3dB gain in the cabin, especially SUV's. It's the same for the roof, flex is bad, but it's probably on a small scale. You want a box inside a box, not a box inside jello. Isn't having a box in a trunk like having a bandpass box that's seperated? If your roof flexes1-2" and is 50x50 that's 2500-5000 square inches of airspace being changed rapidly. -
What vehicle? You should be able to hit 142 @ 40hz with a 12" in a trunk.

If you're concentrating on lows, a $200 Eclipse SW8200 in 1.75 cubes will whoop 2 ported 8's on the lows, it's got a little more cone & power if the 8 is 300w RMS, over double the x-max too. Soundsplinter recommends .4 cubes for their 300-500w rms Rl-i 8", and it's $120ish. I think you can fit 1.75 cubes if you tear out the middle of the seat . 750W-1000W would be sweet. You could make the baffle +4" and have the woofer firing into the back wall, hidden. You'll have an arm rest atleast.

SUV's and hatchbacks have a LOT of cabin gain and that'll add to SQ. I'd give a BTL no less than 2.25 cubes (give'r 2.5). I heard ports should be a 1:2 ratio, like 4 x 8, just so the air isn't totally running along the box walls. You'll want 14-16 square inches of port per cube of airspace, so 2.5 cubes with 40 square inches (16 per) or 2.25 cubes with 31.5 (14 per). With 2 cubes the lowest port area you want is 28 square inches, the max is 32.

Turn everything up and keep your hand on the volume, put on the loudest song you have and when the cone starts sounding overlapped, doubled, clangy, keep the volume full and turn down the gains until it sounds somewhat warm or neutral. Distortion sounds like the motor flapping back & forth too fast, and the cone can't stay linear, but I mean the motor will start sounding like a tin can and not bass. Am I the only one that lives in the country?

229dB?! That's gotta be a large asteroid impact noise. The other three shops I went to were OK, but one of them charged me $300 for a single 12" box.

This might be +$200 out of your budget and too much space but here goes. 2 Eclipse SW8200 12"s (displacement .12, f/s 16-19hz, 670W RMS, $200 each, LMS motor, 38mm x-max) sealed & upfire 1.25-1.75 cubes each between the seat ($50-100 for box) 1500w @ 2-ohm amp (maybe $200 on ebay) total $650-$700 + wiring & install They sound good and get lower than anything I've played with. They're about $200 each online, they're discontinued so I'm pretty sure you can't get recones. Eclipse tech says use 1.75 cubes for a 30hz tune, they're bottom heavy. I've listened to a ported upfire 12 between a single cab seat and it was horrible, it was an Alpine Type-X in an Alpine box on a JL 1000/1. In an S10 extended cab, behind the seats, 2 wallmart 10's or 12's in a small triangle sealed box on a JL 500/1 was better. I've also heard in a single cab a sealed 10" between the seat and it wasn't bad. If not 2 12's, then use 1 12" ported @ 30hz on maybe 1000w. Even two ported 8's in 2 cubes would be sweet. This isn't my picture but it was cool so I saved it.
