WOOOOOOHOOOOO!!! My fun with the Rl-s ;)

Recommended Posts

Well guys (and gals)...

Sorry for the not-so-punctual update. But I've been busy...busy marveling at this thing ;)...

First of all I'd like to thank Mike for the amazing opportunity to demo such a great subwoofer.

Now, to get things started...

WOW. I opened the box, and that is all I said. This thing is massive, especially for a 12. Obviously, with quad stacked mags...and the gigantic motor...but pics do not do it justice. The clearance on this basket is a thing of glory...I mean view you get of the coil and top of the former...an the dual spiders is simply amazing. (get used to this word) ;)

I was quite happy to get my hands on it, especially since I was going to be the first person to actually get to send it some power!!!! WOO! Although, I have less than perfect enclosures for the task. Oh well.

I basically dropped it in the box I have for my 15MT. Made a large baffle for a 12, and plopped it on top. The box is 4.6 cubes @32hz with 90in^2 of port.

To tell you, at first I had one MTX 1501d hooked up...and to tell the honest truth...I was sort of disappointed. Then again, I know this thing isn't the most efficient ;). So, without hesitation, I went for some real power! The Power supplied by a pair of MTX 1501d's strapped @4ohms (each amp seeing a 2ohm load...read as 2500+ watts total).

WOW! wowowowowowowowow, this single 12 is REDICULOUS! I mean INSANE! The shear displacement capabilities are out of this world. It's obviously unlike any woofer I've experienced to date. The driver had no hints of any distortion, took whatever I threw at it and reproduced it with exact precision.

In this particular box (which is obviously not optimal) it struggled with higher bass. When I say struggled, I do not mean it struggled to produce it...I mean it struggle to produce it with as much enthusiasm as every other frequency. That's ok, that's why I have sealed mids with 13MM one-way xmax...and 200+rms per side ;) (My XXX mids). So I adjusted my xover to have the sub on 50hz HP @24 dB/oct slope.

Anyways, it's a great subwoofer. With LOADS of obivously LINEAR displacement capabilities. Give it power, and it will give you TONS of loving in forms you'd never imagine from a single 12. It's simply amazing.

In the few remaining days, I will try to see if I can throw it in a sealed enclosure. I'll update if necessary.

WOW I couldn't get enough of the Rl-s @full xmax free-air...it was a thing of beauty...pure bliss. Ask Jason...I had to keep unpausing...just one more time!!! lol...

Some higher resolution pics will be up later, as well as in the enclosure excursion shots...and hopefully a vid ;)

Good to hear. You screw with MT's every day, so I'm glad to read such good things about the RL-s :)

Thanks for the review and pics.

This sub truely is awesome. From the beastly look of the thing in person (pictures don't even come close to showing how massive every aspect of this woofer actually is...), to the extreme excursion, which was enough to turn Noah into a 5 year old (Do it AGAIN! One more time! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWW!)

The output in the box noah was using was alot, I personally thought the XXX had more, but considering that it was an 18 and this is a 12, it held it's own quite nicely. The RL-S however destroyed the XXX in accuracy. There was no noticable delays, muddiness, or distortion of anykind coming from the RL-S. It was truely clean.

I'd love to hear it in a correct box for it, but due to time constraints that's just not an option.

I don't think I'll be trading in my Mags, but if I ever decide to make a retarded HT setup, I know what my sub-bass driver will be. ;)

how much power can the RL-s theoretically take? And not just Mikes numbers because he dumbassifies his numbers to make sure not even dumba$$es are gonna break his woofers.

Would probably be nice in 4.5 and a little lower tuning huh?

*can't wait to hear it*

EDIT - and you are telling my this 12 was almost as loud as a ported xxx 18?

Did you noticee a nastyyy peak with that tuning? Or did it do pretty well?

Yeah, 4.5 cubes tuned to around 25-28hz would be A LOT better. The low end was just REDICULOUS...I'd say pretty peaky...but it's cool at times lol.

Where abouts was it peaking? You said the low end was ridiculous, is that where it was peaking? I would expect a 45ish hz peak. Trying to nail out how these respond to tunings/volumes so I can do something ideal when I get the woofer.

being that i have the epicenter to process my bass...will it sound decent from the rl-s subs

i hear alot of folks talk about how peaky the response is if its in a smaller box...
